Founded in the USA in 1894, Dunham-Bush is one of the oldest global commercial air conditioning products manufacturers. This film from the 1960s gives an overview of the company and its subsidiaries which included Mack Trucks, The Signal Companies, and real estate and housing, among others. One of its manufacturing facilities is pictured in Riverside, California (1:20) and the headquarters in West Hartford, Connecticut (1:24). A span of other cities they are located in follows (1:26). Inside the facilities, design engineers and skilled craftsmen first develop prototypes (2:03). These are then tested in labs and an example is given of a test on a unit cooler (2:42). Once tested, it moves to one of the plant facilities (2:56) Dunham Bush is one of the few in the industry that constructed all of it’s own major components (3:25). Computer controlled machines are seen at work ensuring precision (3:54). The compressor was their most valuable component (4:18) and a number of these are seen as they produced large amounts. Some were to go into condensing units (4:55) and others into package chillers (5:18). Quality checks are conducted throughout the process (5:33). The screw compressor rotors are looked at next as Dunham Bush is one of the leading manufacturers in the industry of these (6:27). Another important component is the coil copper tubing (6:59) and they are mechanically bonded together for extended heat transfer (7:14). Often their products required a protective shelling for which they used sheet metal (7:49). The computerized sheet metal punch press is seen put to use (7:33). As the sheet metal needed its own protection, layers of paint are sprayed on (8:12). Their line of combustion products also includes the ‘Iron Fireman Burner’ (8:56) and each burner is fire tested. A montage of other products including unit coolers (9:24), unit heaters (9:45), package terminal console units (9:56), and roof mounted conditioners (10:24) follows. Dunham Bush trucks are seen leaving the plant to transport products (10:49). Service technicians conducted in field checks on installation (10:53). As the film wraps up it draws on the company’s global reach and its ability to supply equipment for a variety of commercial and residential purposes (12:18).
