The company distributed these films to TV stations around the United States, where they were used as fillers, and to present historical events and personalities to the public. Bartell referred to the films as a "visual encyclopedia". 0:00 Film 0503: Segment on Gunder Hägg. Hägg was a Swedish runner and multiple world record breaker of the 1940s. He set over a dozen middle distance world records at events ranging from 1500 to 5000 meters, including three at both the 1500 meters and the mile, one at 3000 meters and one at 5000 meters. 1:52 Film 0517: D-Day Plus one, June 7, 1944. Allied troops are seen on the ground in France in the aftermath of Operation Overlord. German prisoners are seized, and American G.I.s pause for cigarettes and some rest before pushing onwards. The train depot at Bernieres-sur-Mer, a seaside town in Normandy, is shown. 2:55 Film 0520: General Charles de Gaulle enters Paris, and street fighting versus German resistance and snipers. General de Gaulle entered Paris on August 25, 1944, after its liberation by Allied and French forces. His arrival was a pivotal moment, as he famously declared "Paris outraged! Paris broken! Paris martyred! But Paris liberated!". The following day, he led a victory march down the Champs-Élysées, solidifying his authority as France's leader in the post-occupation era. 6:48 Fashions of 1935. Women pose in large hats and furs, and the hats are cleverly compared to rooster plumage. 8:29 Film 0537 Winston Churchill tours the Siegfried Line, and stands by Dragon's Teeth. This was photographed in March 1945, when Churchill visited the American Ninth Army, which formed a part of Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery's Twenty-first Army Group. 9:14 Parade for General Wainwright 1945. Upon his return to the United States in September 1945, WWII hero General Jonathan M. Wainwright was honored with homecoming parades in several cities after his release from a Japanese prison camp. He received overwhelming public adoration, dispelling his fear that he would be considered a failure for having surrendered the Philippines. On September 10, 1945, Wainwright landed in San Francisco, where a half-million people lined Market Street to welcome the "hero of Corregidor". He was greeted by his sister and was accompanied in a motorcade down Market Street. 11:19 Film 0573 Fashions of 1935, women's hats. 12:22 Film 0581: 1952 parade of Model T cars, Oldsmobiles and even a horse-drawn trolley car celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the automobile in the United States. 13:20 Film 0593: silkscreening of silk scarfs, as part of display of women's fashions in 1946. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Contact us via the weblink below. This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
