<description>Of Science And Scientists ★ 🥅 Educational Films from Harvard, in the 1950's ••• Of Science And Scientists consists of 23 episodes produced in 1957 by WGBH (Boston) and Harvard College and distributed by National Educational Television - NET "Americans tend to think of the sciences as potentially useful (air-conditioning) or potentially troublesome (Strontium-90). We accept or marvel at the revolutionary products of science while giving little thought to the basic ideas, concepts, techniques and logic that have gone into exploring, understanding and explaining our universe or in building our technical civilization. Such an understanding of science does not come easily. Limited by time and opportunity, scientists do not often explain themselves to non-scientists. Also, the quality of science is most difficult to the layman to understand is its indirect approach to the discovery of truths. Robert Frost summed up the problem by commenting that to his mind all science rested on the question, "How she differs from what she's like." Without attempting to teach physics or chemistry or geology, these programs suggest the qualities and outlook of science. By analogy and demonstration, they reveal the ideas which guide scientific research and the truths that research uncovers. They give an appreciation of what the scientist can and cannot do. As one speaker says, "The important thing about science is not merely that it gives rise to technological miracles, but that it provides us with one of many guidebooks we need to find our way in this universe." Today, as non-scientists are called upon to make decisions or concur in decisions that may affect the future of scientific research and even the future of life, a knowledge of "how she differs from what she's like," may not only be useful, but necessary. By explaining and demonstrating the guiding principles of science and scientists, these programs attempt to convey that increasingly necessary knowledge. Produced by WGBH-TV, Boston, the producer-director was David Walker and the executive producer Lawrence Kreshkoff. Dr. Phillipe Le Corbeiller is Professor of Applied Physics and of General Education at Harvard University. He is host and program editor for Harvard in the television series, "Of Science and Scientists." A leader in Harvard's general education program since its beginning in 1946, when he started the course, "Principles of Physical Science," Dr. Le Corbeiller was the first to be appointed professor of General Education in 1949, in addition to being professor of Applied Physics. Throughout the series Dr. Le Corbeiller is joined by other scientists." The first scene of the introduction shows you a Television Camera belonging to WGBH-TV (Boston) ... A lovely (Antique) State of the Art Black &amp; White Multi-Lens TV Camera filled with hot, glowing, vacuum tube type amplifying circuits - from the Year 1957 ... and our lecturer says something to the effect of 'with the help of this marvel of science: we will bring you the wonders of science ... '. This is like a time window back into the year 1957 - not a thing from 1958 or later to be found - see the 'state of the art' shortly after the transistor was born but before the transistor pocket radio came out. This was a great time to be a scientist! Many of the single episodes - about certain topics would, in the future, wind up having entire Series on that same topic ... that further research - IF you Are Interested! For Episodes 4, 8, 9, and 10 - Look into Astronomy: Observations And Theories ★ "Lost" Telecourse / The Planets ★ 1999 BBC Series / and Hyperspace - with Sam Neill ★ 2001 BBC Series For Episodes 7, 11, and 19 - Look to Advanced Math : Mathematics Illuminated ★ The "Lost" Annenberg Series In Episode #14 - about "Non-Science" : UFO "Flying Saucers" are pretty much given a laughing stock debunking as "Non-Science". I believe U.A.P. - as they call them now - are actually worthy of true scientific research. (If you would like to know why I believe ' there is something out there ' ... please skip down to the reviews: and read the extensive " Footnote about Episode #14 " at the bottom of this page. I recently found a video interview with Betty Hill on Archive.org - which I had not known about before.) This episode is so old : that it has become 'In the News" recently - a current topic once again! Broadcast, Originally over the (then young) National Educational Television (NET) network, as a weekly look into 'What we knew then' as scientists - and scheduled to run for 23 weeks. If you'd like to know more about what "the state of the art" was - how much Science had learned by this point in time - in the year 1957 ... this series is what you are looking for. Be aware that science may have changed its mind about some of the things it thought it knew, since then (Like the "Canals on Mars", that were still rumored to exist, back in the 1950's) - you may find this material horribly, or amusingly, dated. I am not responsible ... if these old ideas rot your brain ... use judiciously please. (You can find an amazing amount of old classroom films moldering on YouTube ... ) NET 🥅 - National Educational Television - was the direct predecessor to the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) ... and to this very day: PBS is still known for producing the highest quality educational and news programming. NET was launched on May 16 1954 by some forward thinking people - who hoped television had a more noble purpose, and destiny, than just being a machine for separating money from slack jawed hypnotized consumers. NET is older than most of us - and the "Grandfather" of all educational television!!! This really ancient series was at the START of a continuing tradition of excellence in educational video ... so now you can see what the state of the art in educational television was (and what their world looked like) in 1957: Sixty Six Years ago. Television was just beginning to be explored as an educational medium at the time ... ripe with potential! Remember, this was still 12 years before Sesame Street would be Born ... literally the DAWN of Educational Television!!! I have enough feedback, from the first clutch of N.E.T. eggs I laid, to know that not everyone considers these extremely old educational films to be a waste of their time. You do get to look at the era before the internet democratized the dissemination of knowledge: the era of films, and classroom projectors - and the card catalog at the local public library - being the best way to learn new things. This literally is 'OLD SCHOOL' pre-internet stuff!!! Now you can Binge Watch the entire 23 Week TV Series ... a new way to Old School knowledge. To the best of my knowledge: all NET movies passed into the Public Domain many years ago - which means you are free to do whatever you wish with these videos. I recommend learning from them - and sharing them.
