It begins with it’s formation through natural processes in sandstone continuing to show major developments resulting from discoveries in PA’s salt mines to the location of major reserves southwest of the US. This led to the challenge of developing a web of interconnected pipelines. Major technological innovations are captured along the way forced by means of growing demand for cheap and efficient energy sources thus refining locating and extraction methods. Later sections show the use of sound waves, seismographs and telemetering systems. Board executives solve complex issues including shifting seasonal demands through the use of formerly depleted revisors for surplus gas for winter months. It explores the industrial versatility of gas and its role in petrochemistry including shots of vintage equipment. Columbia Gas has roots in the oil industry beginning in 1847. In the early 2000’s NiSource and Columbia Energy group merged forming one of the largest energy companies in the US until 2015 as they parted and NiSource became a separate entity. 00:00 The film opens with two workers using a Bell 47 helicopter (:18) to check on an oil well. Centerville, Pennsylvania units take a work call over air conditioning units (1:08) in a 1958 Chevrolet Apache (1:26). The title screen follows (1:56) presented by The Columbia Gas System (2:02). Early history begins with salt and pioneer settlers in the Appalachians digging a brine well using a crude spring-pull rig along river banks in 1815 (2:18). They strike oil (3:14). Flames spring up (3:27) from underground leading to early concerns and the attribution of the name “the wild spirit” to natural gas. Increased sightings throughout Ohio, PA and West Virginia (3:50) led to deliberate digging (4:04) and the innovation of hollow logs as pipes to cart oil over short distances (4:10) enabling light within the home (4:18). In 1840, a Centerville salt maker used oil over wood to boil his brine (4:31). Oil use began to spread through America (5:00) including in street lights and in the kitchen (5:11). Gas attained established prominence by the 1900’s (5:37). Growing population and increased standards of living resulted in higher demand. Revivors were tapped in Ohio, PA and West Virginia (5:38).Innovations leading to refinement of extraction (5:48). Re-enactment of early surface studies of the terrain (5:55) and the birth of subsurface geology (6:18). A geologist promotes subsurface geology and a new test well (6:40). Movement of gas through layers of sediment (7:04). Early dry hole digging included horse and cart (9:55). Smoke fills the rig justifying the new science of gas geology (10:43). Seismographs and sound waves (11:10). Workers seek variations in the earth’s magnetic field (11:19) in the Southwest (11:52) leading to the construction of a network of nearly a quarter of a million miles of pipeline (12:17). Aerial shots (12:36) highlight varied terrain pipes traversed including mountains, rivers (12:41) and swamps. The Toromat Cat 583 pipelayer with hydraulic side boom follows (12:44). A worker prepares equipment for perforating a well at well head platform (12:51). A cable tool rig (12:58) and rapid pipe laying follow (13:03). Experts (13:27) take on challenges of seasonal demands (14:00) through the use of previously depleted reservoirs (16:19). Old wells get reconditioned (17:53). Compressor stations (18:48), measuring and regulating stations (19:08) and city gate stations are highlighted (19:27). A section relays how to regulate oil during a cold snap. Shots include the telemetering system (20:42), a teletypewriter (20:57), McElroy Pipeline Analyzer (21:12) and an IBM 650 (21:38). The petrochemical industry (25:42) and offshore drilling (27:19) . The End (28:21). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
