The start of the film shows the Qantas Lockheed Constellation "Ross Smith", and apparently dates to 1960. The second half of the film starting around 7 minutes may be from earlier. A resort "The Cottage" in Shalimar is shown at :14, as well as footage of a woman and her dog (presumably the wife of whoever shot the film). At 1:10 a turbaned man, possibly the hotelier, poses with a vase of flowers. At 1:14, a group of turbaned soldiers are shown from the rear. At 2:06, cats drink milk from a bowl. At 2:15, a man (possibly the filmmaker?) gets into a right hand drive taxi and takes a ride through the jungle. A hotel is visible at 2:39. The car at 2:48 appears to be a 1948 Nash Ambassador. At 3:09 a roadside market is shown, and at 3:13 a man and a woman are shown in front of a jeep. At 3:27 a lovely waterfall and pool. At 3:51, a local shopping district followed by additional shots of the pool and falls. At 5:19 a large three horned rhinoceros beetle is posed on a man's arm. At 5:54 a girl poses with a sheep. At 6:13 cattle are shown grazing on a hillside. At 6:35, young men in civilian outfits are seen carrying guns and conducting a drill. At 6:50, a man in khaki clothes fires a pistol as part of the training. At 6:55, Mayalan Railways steam locomotive #56403 arrives at a train station, possibly Kota Bharu. This was the Scottish "Alor Setar" steam locomotive which was shipped to Malaya in 1946. Sign for Kota Bharu, which serves as the state capital and royal seat of Kelantan. At 7:09, a Qantas bus rumbles across an airport tarmac. At 7:20, a BOAC flying boat, a Short Solent II, is shown. BOAC ended operations with this type of aircraft in 1950, but they were flown by other carriers including Tasman Empire Airways Ltd. up to 1960, so perhaps this is a Tasman aircraft. The film continues with shots on board the airplane and out the window. At 10:22 a traditional fishing sailboat is shown. The End. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
