The film features images shot aboard the USS Independence in the mid-1960s with F-4 Phantoms, F-111 Aardvarks, and A-4 Skyhawks. In any era before GPS, the inertial navigation system allowed for aircraft and ships to navigate accurately and in concert with one another. However in order to synchronize the system, warm-up time was required and a system of umbilical cables connecting the planes and ship was utilized, as well as other equipment that required up to ten minutes of precious time. Autonetics, a division of North American, demonstrated a wireless data link aboard the USS Constellation that would greatly speed up aircraft availability for combat. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
