This film "Sailors with Wings", which apparently was released in 1944 or 1945, profiles the U.S. Navy with a focus on the "flying fleet" of aircraft. At 2:55 a PBY Catalina is shown on anti-submarine patrol in the Atlantic. At 4:16 the U.S. Navy Department in Washington, D.C. is shown featuring Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox. At 4:47 the Bureau of Aeronautics is shown, with planners studying aircraft designs both foreign and domestic. At 5:35, airmen recruits are shown at Pensacola, Jacksonville and other facilities being trained. At 6:29 the film looks back on some of the history of U.S. Naval Aviation. At 7:00, the 35mm film vault is shown where millions of feet of film preserve Navy history including footage of WWI naval seaplanes (7:49). At 8:03 the NC-4 is shown flying the Atlantic via Lisbon. At 8:45, the first flights from the USA's first aircraft carrier USS Langley are shown. At 9:21, the technique of dive bombing is shown. At 10:14, a shore station is shown -- probably San Diego -- with torpedoes being moved and cadets and airmen shown. At 10:55 Sikorsky S-42 flying boats are shown. At 11:45, modern aircraft carriers possibly USS Lexington or the USS Saratoga are shown, with their complement of aircraft including Wildcat fighters, TBF dive bombers, and torpedo bombers (14:40). At 16:46, scout planes are seen being launched from a battleship. At 17:40 a new aircraft carrier is launched down the ways. At 17:55, Navy recruits are shown in training. At 18:16 the huge Martin JRM Mars flying boat is shown. We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment!
