<description>This 1959 episode of The Air Force Story—"Volume II, Chapter III: On To The Yalu, 1950” (SFP 263)—covers the efforts of the U.S. Air Force during the second half of 1950, culminating in the push to the Yalu River. The film opens with new Air Force recruits arriving to training bases in the summer of 1950 (01:13). The training program involves aircraft maintenance and operation, including flying a Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star (01:58). An aerial shot (02:18) of an air field shows the work that most go in to planning the logistics of air supply for the Korean conflict. Under the command of Lieutenant Laurence S. Kuter, the USAF successfully airlifts supplies and equipment across the Pacific. Civilian airlines (02:57), including American Overseas Airlines, Overseas National Airways, and United Airlines, are used to transport troops. Pacific Airlift transports land in Japan, dropping off cargo and men. From Japan, the cargo is transported to the Korean peninsula under the command of Major General William H. Tunner, head of U.S. Combat Cargo. A C-47 arrives at Taegu Airfield (04:16) with the Navy’s Admiral Charles Turner Joy and Vice Admiral Arthur Dewey Struble, who meet with the Air Force’s Major General Earle Everard Patridge, Lieutenant General George E. Stratemeyer, and Lieutenant General I.H. Edwards (05:00). B-29s are sent to attack Korean airfields in enemy hands (05:35) as a lead-up to the Inchon operation. B-29s bomb communist positions and targets (06:00). On 15 September 1950 at Inchon, Navy ships fire (06:45) to dislodge enemy troops. General Douglas MacArthur (06:58) watches the 1st Marine Division land on beach and begin the push inland. U.N. ground forces start making gains, largely due to Air Force operations. U.N. forces march into Seoul (08:02) and continue north. Tanks and troops advance to the Yalu River, while the Combat Cargo Command’s C-47s and C-119s prepare for airdrops in enemy territory (08:35). The plan is to deliver troops, ammunition, food, jeeps, and howitzers in an effort to trap the retreating enemy. The C-47s and C-119s take off from Japan (09:25) and drop nearly 4,000 paratroopers and several tons of cargo (10:00). Impressive footage shows the massive undertaking of airdropping paratroopers, supplies, and equipment. Enemy aircraft arrive to challenge the U.S. Air Force, as MiG-15s (11:33) make their debut in Korea. F-80s take on the MiGs, shooting many down (11:56) because of the superior skills of the Air Force pilots flying inferior aircraft. Ground forces (12:44) fight of the cold of winter as they make their way to the Yalu River (13:14); they do not advance beyond river as the Chinese army joins the war. However, at the end of 1950, U.S. air power is decisive. The film concludes with what appears to be squadron of F-82G Twin Mustangs (13:42) flying in formation, demonstrating “U.S. supremacy of the air.” We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment!
