TIROS (Television Infrared Observation Satellite) I, launched in April 1960, was the world's first weather satellite. TIROS imaged large swaths of the Earth's surface, allowing forecasters and scientists to see directly for the first time the large-scale features of our planet's weather systems. 11:57: Interview with Lieutenant Colonel Tom Morgan about the Thor Able Star booster and its features. 12:41: Discussion on the payload and mission of the Transit 1B satellite. Navy Transit 1B was the first experimental orbital navigation satellite. It was launched into orbit by a Thor-Able-Star rocket on 13 April 1960 from Cape Canaveral. The payload was the first navigation system experiment ever put into orbit.  13:30: The success of the Transit 1B launch and its significance in space exploration.
