It looks at the first designs as well as initial testing of models, equipment, and finally the first flying aircraft. There are tests in wind tunnels, as well as altitude and cold temperature tests. The production process is also shown, including some of the “secrets” of how the bomber can be built so fast. This includes a modern production line, different parts fitting like puzzle pieces, and innovative employees making suggestions to improve the production process. A recurring theme is the increased efficiency in production that can only be achieved through all types of people working together in the factory. 0:13 Title “The Boeing Aircraft Company Presents Fortress of the Sky”, 0:42 a US Air force Pilot drawing a woman, 1:07 crew gest on a B-17 called “Glamor Girl” and take off with it, 2:12 B-17s fly in formation, 2:32 couple read newspaper about a Super fortress bombing Nazis, 3:02 Boeing workers clocking in and working on a bomber aircraft, 3:23 a new B-17 pulled out of the factory, 3:41 B-17 flying, 4:02 Boeing engineers sitting at a table looking at sketches of the wheels, the engines, and the cockpit, 5:25 overview of the different planes built by Boeing including the “Monomail”, B-9, and the 247, 5:56 early sketch of the B-17, 6:33 Aerial footage from first B-17 flight, 7:08 the different turrets of the B-17 moving around, 7:51 B-17s flying in formation, 8:03 engineers testing a scale model of the B-17 in a wind tunnel, 9:27 different shots of the B-17 at different altitudes, 10:11 Test subjects entering a Hypobaric Chamber to simulate equipment function at high altitude, 11:01 Equipment engineers enter a cold chamber to test equipment, 12:10 Boeing flight test engineers with oxygen masks testing the B-17 in flight, 13:01 an acoustical engineer testing different sounds and then working on quelling different noises inside the aircraft, 13:51 the Boeing “Clipper” flying, 13:02 Boeing Stratoliner taking off, 14:24 engineers working at tables, in labs, and with microscopes, 14:50 combat footage from the attack on Pearl Harbor, 15:16 B-17s taking off from airports in the Pacific, 15:58 engineer breaks a model B-17 apart to demonstrate how an assembly line process can be used to make more bombers, 16:20 separate units being brought together to create a bomber, 17:17 finished B-17 rolls out of the factory, 17:40 demonstration of new production techniques including new machine for the skeleton, 18:18 wires brought out and installed on B-17, 19:35 a suggestion box for faster production method ideas, 19:54 demonstration of new garment punch and a parts numberer, 20:07 female employees clocking out, driving vehicles in the factory, and inspecting a bomber, 21:08 footage of B-17s taking off and flying in formation, 22:34 close up of navigator looking down, 22:43 bomb bay doors open and bombs are released, 23:08 Boeing engineers sitting together in a huge room, 23:42 B-17s fly into the sunset in formation, 23:51 title “The End” The B-17 is a four-engined heavy bomber developed in the 1930s and dropped more bombs than any other aircraft during the second World War.
