This pre-war exercise involved three companies of the 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division and the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division, and was led by General Holland McTyeire "Howlin' Mad" Smith. The film shows the amphibious exercise starting with beach landing. It also includes a paradrop by the new 1st Parachute Battalion of the Paramarines organized from Simmons-Nott Airfield (now Coastal Carolina Reginal Airport) in New Bern NC. The film shows the coordination of landing vehicle tracked (LVTs) and demonstrates the tactics critical to amphibious assault operations. The footage shows LVT-1 Alligators navigating surf and sand dunes, while Higgins Boats (LCVPs) deliver Marines and supplies onto shore. It also shows paratroops deploying from Douglas C-47 Skytrains. Note: the Alligator / AMTRAC shown at 5:10 is apparently the first / prototype vehicle LVT-1 or proof of concept vehicle. It still has a panel of red paint on it. 00:00 Distant warplanes dot sky (0:06). LVT-1 Alligator drives onto sand from shallow water (0:12). Another LVT-1 Alligator makes approach to shore (4:19). Another shot of LVT-1 Alligator driving over rolling sanding dunes (4:38). Close-up of deflated white parachute after landing, Marines demonstrate repackaging parachute into backpack (9:47). Camera follows one journey of paratrooper falling from sky, landing in grass (10:10). Douglas C-47 dropping more paratroopers (10:37). LVT-1 Alligator drives off of muddy bank into water before demonstrating driving up muddy bank (11:11). USMC or U.S. Navy Douglas BT-13 Valiant taxiing behind another plane (12:09). Paratroopers / paraMarines disembark from Douglas C-47 wearing what appear to be USAAF Type A-4 QAC Parachute Packs (12:36). Film ends (12:58). The "Alligator" amphibian tractor is the progenitor of all amphibian assault vehicles used since 1941. It was designed by Donald Roebling, a grandson of Colonel Washington Roebling (designer of the Brooklyn Bridge). LVTs became central to U.S. amphibious strategies, particularly in the Pacific islands and European coastal assaults, allowing for the seamless movement of troops from water to shore under challenging conditions. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
