<description>Robert Rietty, known as “the king of dubbers” and “the man of 1,000 voices,” narrates this short film about the Republic of San Marino. It is directed and photographed by cinematographer Cedric Williams. Baggage and passengers board an Alitalia DC-6B plane at London’s airport before taking off for Italy (:26-1:00). Views of farm fields (1:03), are seen through a car window as it heads from the Adriatic coast inland to San Marino, a Republic inside the Republic of Italy. Cars and a bicyclist cross the bridge (1:41) that divides the two. The woman driving the car stops at the passport office and her passport is stamped (2:01-2:40). Three soldiers (2:43) march and turn at the line dividing the two Republics. People sit and watch the cars go by (2:52) as a wagon cart pulled by a team of oxen is led by a man (2:58). Three medieval towers, Guaita, Cesta, and Montale, perch atop the sheer cliffs (3:14). Cars navigate the sharp twisting road (3:31), heading up a steep incline to the main gate of this city built on Monte Titano (3:47). They must park as no vehicles are allowed in the city. A crowd walks through a walled entry (4:01). A group of soldiers in plumed helmets (4:27-4:54) march their routine in front of the Governor’s Palace under a Statue of Liberty (4:55) as the bells in the clock tower (5:02) chime. A statue of Saint Marinus (5:12), founder of the state in 301 A.D. is seen. San Marino has two governors: one representing San Marino and the other Italy (5:34). Outside, tourists visit the prison ruins at Guaita (7:09). The majestic view (7:17-7:42) encompasses the Tuscan urbanites, the Adriatic Sea, and the Apennine Mountains, captured on postcards (8:02). The city’s birthday celebration in 1956 begins with archers in 13th century costumes using crossbows to hit a target (8:29-9:10). Window shoppers buy souvenirs (9:43-10:02). The ceramic factory employs painters and workers firing ovenware jars to be sold to tourists (10:03-10:47). 1959 Olympic stamps are available to purchase in 40 designs (11:01). Patrons eating at a restaurant (11:24-12:25) enjoy wine and food. A Mass procession (12:26-15:56) carries the statue of Saint Marinus down the streets, where it is blessed and then returned to the church. Afterwards, people dance at the Il Nido del Falco (16:45). At the rock of San Leo (17:56), red grapes are picked by men, women, and children (18:22-19:12). Couples dance while a band plays (19:14-20:00). At San Marino, people view a modern art exhibition (20:26-21:24) as an artist paints outside (21:26). The visitor departs and returns to London on an Alitalia DC-6B airplane (22:16). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
