<description>Made in the aftermath of the Chernobyl Disaster in 1986, this bizarre Ukranian government film attempts to alleviate some of the worry that civilians must have experienced as a result of the incident, by showing some of the steps that can be taken to decontaminate in the wake of the release of nuclear material. It's all set to an amazing soundtrack! The film begins with images of the Chernobyl disaster, with the ruined reactor building seen at :21 seconds, and the interior of the control room seen at :30. A radioactive release from the reactor has now occurred and the nearby city of Kiev needs to be alerted. At 1:30, an alarm sounds and children move indoors as part of the drill. Civilians move to shelters at 2:00, calmly and without panic. At 2:20, a housewife learns about the radioactive release and signals her children to come indoors. At 2:55, she shuts off the gas and electric appliances, seals the windows, and prepares food and documents for a quick evacuation. At 3:22, she and her children leave their apartment with masks over their faces. At 3:44, farm workers are alerted about the release and move quickly and calmly to a waiting bus for evacuation. At 4:20, they enter a fallout shelter. At 4:45, prophylactic doses of iodine are given to students in an attempt to prevent thyroid cancer. At 5:12, emergency response teams move out including men in full nuclear-biological-chemical suits. At 5:30, these men study radiation levels with geiger counters and report their findings. Meanwhile the radioactive cloud's movements are traced at headquarters. At 6:30, an apartment dweller is seen sealing her windows against radioactive dust with wet cloth or napkins, and vents are also sealed. Decontamination can also be aided by putting down plastic sheeting. At 7:30, food supplies are moved into a shelter. At 7:50, a well is sealed against contamination by nuclear dust, with the bucket placed upside-down. At 8:15, a home and foliage are decontaminated by hosing them down. At 8:57, showers are taken to remove radioactive dust. At 9:30, a child is seen eating fruit which could be contaminated, but most likely is not due to the precautions shown earlier in the film. The well is also seen in safe operation, thanks to the elaborate but simple steps seen taken earlier in the film. The Chernobyl disaster, also referred to as the Chernobyl accident, was a catastrophic nuclear accident. It occurred on 26 April 1986 in the No.4 light water graphite moderated reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near Pripyat, in what was then part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union (USSR).
