This silent, color home movie depicts a 1946 visit to Tumacácori National Historical Park and a small family gathering at the Rancho Santa Cruz on Tucson Road in Nogales, Arizona (TRT 6:18). A sign hangs outside an Arizona farm property, “Rancho Santa Cruz.” A yellow stop sign is also visible against the rolling hills and blue skies of the Sonoran Desert (0:21). White single-story dwellings with slotted terracotta colored roofing. A slow pan outdoors reveals green shrubbery and bare trees (0:29). A sign: “Tumacácori National Monument” with a message about Jesuit Father Francisco Kino (0:44). Overexposed shot of a barren, sunbaked landscape (0:55). The chapel of Mission San José de Tumacácori in what is now Tumacácori National Historical Park with a visitor for scale (1:11). Men, women, and children on horseback riding towards the camera and over the rough terrain (1:34). Diving into a swimming pool wearing a bathing cap (1:56). Women chat poolside. A man dips a child’s feet into the water. Another woman tests the temperature (2:10). A shaggy white dog pulls a rope to ring a bell with the help of a young boy in overalls (2:31). Women in collared print dresses laugh. An elderly man grabs the boy by the shoulders (2:43). Mountains on the horizon. An elderly woman removes her sunglasses (3:00). The boy in denim and a cowboy hat. A 3/4 angle view of the range with desert fauna (3:20). A white pony is reigned and mounted by a girl in a plaid shirt and grey cowboy hat, who rides away (3:36). The girl (sans hat) cuddles a cat poolside (3:42). The girl atop a brown and white donkey. An elderly man pets the donkey and removes his hat (4:10). Desert landscape views. A white horse in profile (4:38). With some help, the girl saddles up the white horse (4:42). Equestrian fun in the scenic painted hills of Arizona (4:56). A portrait. Mountains and punched holes (5:31). Standing atop a hill of gravel (5:36). The horses drink from a stream (5:47). Riding away from the camera, down an open dirt road that leads to a clearing, and back again (5:52). Rancho Santa Cruz was originally created in the 1920s by Talbot T. "Tol" Pendleton, an oil man and former All-American football player from Princeton, and his partner, F.M. Dougherty. In the 1950s, wealthy Easterner Doris Oesting bought the ranch and converted it into a dude ranch with a pool. It became a "hangout" for many people in the movie business including John Wayne and Stewart Granger. It still exists to this day. Tumacácori National Historical Park was declared a National Monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908. The park served as the original shooting location for the film, “Duel in the Sun,” directed by King Vidor in 1946, the same year this home movie was filmed.
