The film was written by Oscar Saul, an American screenwriter with a forty year career spanning from 1940 to the 1980's. The film portrays the fight against syphilis similarly to a living villain. Sexually transmitted diseases spread rapidly among the troops as wars spread overseas. Issues of sexual hygiene in the military drew the U.S. government’s attention resulting in an influx of sexual education films .At the time treatment consisted of sulfa drugs and penicillin. Syphilis was a particularly difficult bawdy bug to treat resulting in heavy losses of time for the Army. Treatment was a grueling six month ordeal. The film opens with a parallel story of two expecting fathers. One pats a happy healthy newborn bottom while the other confronts a sick wife and empty nursery due to the syphilis bug. It details tales of men falling ill or going mad from untreated disease as well as night scenes of dingy bars and dark alleys sexually transmitted diseases linger in. The film is presented by the US Public Health Services Federal Security Agency (:27). American character actor; Arnold moss narrates (:44). The film opens with scenes from the general hospital (1:00). Two fathers await news in the paternity wing (1:13). The nurse (2:12) informs a father the newborn is a boy (2:31). A doctor approaches another father in the waiting room (3:07). The other man accepts the fate of a lost child (3:49); names chosen and not used. His wife sobs in bed (4:15). He attempts to console her (4:26). The doctor informs the husband the spirochete germ within the mother’s body caused that death of the unborn (5:00). A 1940’s Wurlitzer jukebox (5:33) plays a tune. The narrator hints at positively infected persons wandering around the streets. A man smooches his wife good night (6:07). He pauses in the street clutching a hand to his chest (6:13). He drops to the sidewalk (6:14) and his wife frantically bends over. The physician discovers the patient’s heart is failing due to untreated syphilis (6:38). The germ is magnified under the scope; a wiggle white worm (6:42). Chemists test prevention and treatment methods (7:15). A microscope test (7:25) and blood test are performed (7:32). Scenes where syphilis might be easily spread are looked to including schools, colleges (8:03); navy men scurry across a carrier deck (8:10). Foot soldiers march by (8:13). An old Coca Cola advertisement hangs outside stores lining the streets (8:57). Ankles and toes dance at a local bar called Joes (9:10). A pair stalk off to spread syphilis (9:58). Moss explains untreated syphilis leads to blindness and insanity (10:43). A chart details the spread of syphilis (11:02). The narrator warns of fake doctors (11:39). The health department's Venereal disease clinic is offered as a safe treatment facility (11:56). Locals submit to blood tests (12:29). Blood samples are tested in the lab (12:42).  A patient who has contracted the disease receives treatment (13:25). A doctor is sent on a house call from the clinic (13:40). STD posters line the walls (13:50); sexual hygiene pamphlets are pictured (13:59). A study group (14:09) discusses methods of prevention. A young couple learns from their doctor (14:29). A board meeting of physicians and doctors discuss the battle against syphilis (15:10). A blind man (15:37) is guided into the doorway of the home for the blind. A mental hospital appears (15:59). A sick man from syphilis and his child appear; a burden to society (16:16). The cost in industry is exemplified as work piles up, left undone by workers too sick from the disease (16:46). Statistics from 1917 are presented (17:06) the film concludes with images of the 'typical' American family nestled around the dinner table praying (17:41). A Sound Masters Production (18:13).  Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
