<description>In this 1944 issue of Army-Navy Screen Magazine, viewers see a tribute to the late Lt. Gen. Lesley James McNair. McNair shakes hands with soldiers on an airstrip next to a plane, then he is shown sitting inside a car. Next, the film shows an aerial view of the cities of Normandy left in ruins following the heavy fighting that preceded the Allied liberation of the region (01:48). Troops fire artillery guns and off in the distance a building in a city is burning. A soldier talks on a radio while in the street of a town. A plane strafes ground targets and a German fighter plane. Douglas A-20 Havocs fly in the air, and explosions go off on the ground below the light bombers. Footage shows the fierce fighting in the streets of Cherbourg (04:12), where U.S. troops fire at Nazi targets. Nazi soldiers emerge from a building and surrender with their hands in the air. In a city (possibly Cherbourg), U.S. soldiers raise the American flag (05:48); French citizens cheer during the flag raising ceremony. As troops march out of a town, French wave goodbye. Next, viewers see a “Report from Iowa,” which gives troops an update on life on a farm in Iowa. Men walk home from working at a war plant. A night watchman checks the door to a produce store. At the farm of Scott Ellis, Ellis wakes up his youngest son. He then walks out of his house and looks at the skies. The family sits down for breakfast (09:54). The boy feeds the hogs; piglets nurse on their mother. The boy then goes and milks a cow (11:25) while his mother feeds the chickens. Ellis drives a tractor out in the field. His daughter drives another tractor (13:37). Footage shows other young women and boys working the Iowa farms. The issue concludes with a short cartoon of Private Snafu, “Payday.” In the cartoon, Private Snafu is tempted to spend his money on souvenirs, booze, and gambling rather than saving his money for his future. Lesley James McNair (May 25, 1883 – July 25, 1944) was a senior United States Army officer who served during World War I and World War II. He attained the rank of lieutenant general during his life; he was killed in action during World War II, and received a posthumous promotion to general. He was killed by friendly fire while in France to act as commander of the fictional First United States Army Group, part of the Operation Quicksilver deception that masked the actual landing sites for the Invasion of Normandy. During Operation Cobra, an Eighth Air Force bomb landed in his foxhole during combat near Saint-Lô when the Army attempted to use heavy bombers for close air support of infantry operations as part of the Battle of Normandy.
