Rushmore under construction. At the time, the massive project was nearly complete with all four presidents' heads in place. At 3:04, a large winch house is visible atop Theodore Roosevelt's head, which provided power to a bucket system on a cable. At 3:38, the large bucket moves down the winch line, either carrying debris or workers from the summit. Work officially ceased on October 31, 1941. Construction took 14 years to complete; 7 months prior to the shut down of work, sculptor Gutzon Borglum died in Chicago. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
