This time machine of a film will take viewers on a ride on the 5 cent electriquette, tour the historic celebration of the construction of the Panama canal. The film leaves you dreaming on a sepia toned world not quite left behind. Viewers get a glimpse into style; ladies don light dresses of the Edwardian era swinging at the calf accompanied by tiny umbrellas. Men wear suits, button downs and high waisted trousers. July 4th Independence Day proved the highest attendance; Ellen Beach Yaw lights up the stage, Oregon troops, early silent screen film stars, famed native chieftains and political elites attend including Mr. and Mrs. Hughes. Charles Evans Hughes was set to match Woodrow Wilson for the 1916 election. It was designed to tout San Diego as the first US port of call for ships traveling north after a westward pass through the canal during a time of hopeful connectivity amid a war torn Earth. The title screen appears (:14). Taft and Wilson (:19) endorsed the festival. Sailor and suited servicemen parade on opening day (:52). Attendees wander through the Plaza de Panama (1:25). Electriquette cars (1:48) follow designed by the LA Exposition Motor Chair Company. A boxy framed Studebaker (2:28) unloads Mr. and Mrs. Chas C. Moore (2:35) for a joint meeting of the Presidents of California’s two international expositions.  The quartet (2:59) move up stones steps to feed pigeons in the plaza (3:09). Pigeons swim up trouser pants (3:22). The trolley runs for the Isthumus (3:32). Garland overhangs the courtyard (4:25). A squat 1903 Oldsmobile appears (4:41). Charles Evans Hughes arrives (5:22). Ellen Beach Yaw (6:20) performs “California Nightingale” and “Skylark.” Mr. and Mrs. Hughes sit with children (7:11). A chieftain performs a ritual; erratic sand tapping under a feathered headdress and costume (8:10). The Hughes’ greet visitors at the US government building (8:45). President Davidson welcomes Roosevelt (10:18). Taft (10:51) stands on the platform. The Cavalry (11:04) and army march (11:22).  Visitors spin turnstiles at the East Gate entry (11:41). Motorists make a lunch stop near Capistrano (12:30). Crowds push for the candy stripped awning on Hollywood Day (13:19). Myrtle Stedman; leading lady of the silent film era, performs (13:37). Ruth Roland and Henry King attend (14:37). Social worker and Theosophist, Katherine Tingley and seniors of the Raja Yoga College are featured (14:55). The first American based Greek theater is dedicated in 1916. It would be erected in Point Loma (15:15). Torch bearers carting various nation flags (15:41) plea for peace as WWI continued. Scenes capture Native American rituals and home living (17:01); Apache, Hopi and Acona Indians work on looms (17:01), greet friends (18:56) and wash clothes (19:47). Zoo lions (21:36) and Billie the Cheetah pace behind iron bars for feed (22:18). Elephants kick up trunks (23:38). Tamers enter cages (23:53). Young girls play on the step of a Ford Model T; pigeons swallow the scene (24:42). At the Balboa Stadium (25:10), students form the American flag. Visitors flap hats for the Pied Piper of Hamelin Town at the Expo (26:51). A military fleet heads for the military camp at the Exposition (27:23). A wedding follows at the isthmus (28:05). The Red cross float moves down the Preparedness Parade (31:24). A drill follows on Elk’s Day (34:46). Seals play in rookery waters on San Clemente Island (36:45). Marguerite Clark; star of the 1916 release of Snow White kisses the crowd (39:30). The Tommasinos Royal Italian band performs on the Plaza de Panama (40:11). Couples sway for a moonlight Ball (42:33). A choir on Swedish Day (43:00), Hispanic string musicians (44:07), the floral parade (44:29), the fire chiefs (48:36) annual convention and seal for Great Western closes the feature (50:36).
