The film shows excellent color shots of people in Tibetan traditional clothes from different regions. This is followed by a procession of monks and the start of the festival. The festival features several elaborate Tibetan Opera performances. Thomas Lowell Sr. is best known for publicizing Lawrence of Arabia. In 1949, Thomas was the first foreigner to be invited to Tibet and he met with the Dalai Lama to discuss US support for Tibetan independence. He was accompanied by his son, Lowell Thomas Jr. who later became a senator for Alaska. In 2006, the Dalai Lama bestowed the International Campaign for Tibet's Light of Truth Award on Lowell Jr and referred to him as "one of the grandfathers of modern day Tibet.” "Expedition to Lhasa"" was a film made by the father and son team in 1949. The film was about their 400-day expedition to Lhasa, Tibet, which was the last time Westerners reached the city before the Chinese invasion. Thomas also wrote a book about the expedition, Out of This World, which was published in 1950. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
