        <description>THE TRUMAN YEARS is a film from a series on Presidential Administrations that chronicles President Harry S. Truman and his administration. Harry S. Truman (May 8, 1884 – December 26, 1972) was an American statesman who served as the 33rd President of the United States (1945–1953), taking the office upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. A World War I veteran, he is known for implementing the Marshall Plan, the establishment of the Truman Doctrine and NATO against Soviet and Chinese communism, and for intervening in the Korean War. He is the only world leader to have used nuclear weapons in war. He desegregated the U.S. Armed Forces, supported a newly independent Israel, and was a founder of the United Nations. The film begins in 1945, as 12 million Americans were fighting in WW2 (:51). Victory began favoring the Allies in  spring, 1945 (:53). On April 6th, FDR was pronounced dead and Truman is sworn in (1:09). Truman entered politics as Senator of Missouri in 1934 (1:28) and later became FDR’s running mate (1:42).Less than a month after he became President, General Dwight Eisenhower took Germany’s surrender (1:52). The fall of Hitler was celebrated on May 7th and the first atom bomb was dropped in New Mexico (1:55). Images from Alamogordo show scientists watching the bomb detonate, while wearing protective glasses. In Potsdam, Truman received reports of the bomb deciding to use it to force surrender of Japan (2:32).On August 6th, Enola Gay takes off for Japan after the proposal for surrender was rejected (2:45). The first atom bomb is dropped on Hiroshima (3:16) and three days later on Nagasaki (3:16). The Japanese surrender on August 10th and it is made official in September on the USS Missouri (3:30). The film turns to domestic affairs (3:55). In August of 1946, Truman signs into law an act creating the atomic energy commission (4:06). It was established for the search of use of atomic energy in health, agriculture, and industry (4:18). Strikes in railway, steal mills and Chicago meat processing plants spurred the passing of the Taft-Hartley act making changes in the Wagner Labour law (5:29). Although Truman opposed, Congress passed it on June 23rd, 1947 (6:04). Truman was renominated and beat the favored Republican on his ‘Fair Deal’ platform (7:07). During his second term, Congress created a housing financing agency (7:45), yet denied Federal bills to aide public education (5:06). Truman appoints former President Hoover to lead the commission to reorganize the Executive branch of the government (5:41). The next segment on world affairs (9:11) begins in San Francisco, when representatives from 50 countries met to form the United Nations Organization (9:19).  After Germany's surrender, Hermann Goring and other Nazi officials were tried for war crimes at the Nuremberg Trials (9:50). Communists began to gain power in Eastern Europe after much of it was destroyed and people left homeless and starved (10:10). Determined to stop the spread to Greece and Turkey, Truman asks Congress to send $400 million in aide (10:33). Food and supplies are shipped, and this becomes known as the Truman Doctrine (10:45).  Through the Marshall Plan, assistance to fourteen European countries in need is proposed (11:02). On May 14th, 1948; Israel became an independent state and elected it's first Prime Minister the following year (11:17).  In Berlin, the Cold War between East and West Germany escalated (11:48). A blockade was imposed to force Allied troops out and halt supplies from West Germany on April 1st, 1948 (12:00).  American air lift deliveries for thirteen months eventually broke the barrier on May 12th, 1949 (12:47). In China, Communist factions fight the Nationalist government and after failed attempts to negotiate peace, the US issues a ‘white paper’ on China (13:16). The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (13:47) is formed being the first peace treaty signed by multiple nations (13:55). Eisenhower is appointed Supreme NATO Commander (14:14).  In 1949, Truman announces Russia has developed an atom bomb (15:21). Communist forces invade the Free Republic of South Korea on June 25th, 1950 (15:39). Truman appeals for a joint UN effort to end the aggression, and they are initially successful. Chinese forces however, enter the War forcing the UN to retreat (16:35). After two years, a cease fire is negotiated (17:01). Truman will not run for president again (17:16) and instead Esinehower is inaugurated on January 21st, 1953. As the film draws to a close Truman is shown assisting in the opening of the Truman library which will hold his life's works (17:54).
