(:12). In 1945, Sutherland opened John Sutherland Productions and began pumping out animated films for general use as well as targeted propaganda films. The Cold War era was a highly prolific period for Sutherland as his work caught the eye of Walt Disney. Most of the films delivers a heavy handed pro-industrial message. Films were financed by major corporate entities such as the American Petroleum Industry in order to shape public opinion. This is the second feature created by John Sutherland following the highly successful ‘Destination Earth’ film released in 1956. It features the alien clan under the guidance of a leader called Ogg who has Stalin-like qualities. Leadership of the Ogg people is portrayed as egotistical and fallible. It opens as Ogg the Great's (:51) voice booms over a loudspeaker addressing his fellow green aliens about a rally at Ogg memorial stadium. Bouncing yellow headed aliens cart a banner welcoming Colonel Cosmic past the Ogg Mart Grocery Store and the Ogg Cafe (1:04). Posters of Ogg’s face appear near the Ogg Memorial Stadium (1:31). The mean green authoritarian leader looks over his subjects (1:57); he employs a screen to illicit responses from the dead pan crowd. He introduces Colonel Cosmic (2:27). Cosmic informs the crowd his trip was made possible by ‘Ogg power’ (2:54). An exhausted servant runs on a rat wheel symbolizing the proletariat (3:00). The servant is stabbed with a needle producing higher speeds (3:00). Here they insinuate communistic governments rely heavily on the back breaking labor of the proletariat. They refer to the first film known as ‘Destination Earth’ (3:07). Tiny aliens hurriedly hammer at new space crafts for exploration symbolizing the US versus Soviet Russia space race (3:50). He buzzes for the US (4:31) and crash lands. The alien leaders are depicted as being in awe of the US automobile (5:18) and petroleum industry. He assumes the vehicles only belong to elites (6:02) insinuating a lack of access to vehicles to the common people of their planet (in other words communistic societies). He locates a gas station (6:18) to learn and understand the petroleum industry. They show the process of oil drilling (7:39) via cartoon including exploratory drilling (7:57). Free enterprise is detailed; how competing companies develop and discover new sources of oil; for example (8:34). Oil is traced to the refinery (9:00). Other products produced by petroleum are discussed (9:19). This leads to the idea of increasing higher standards of living. As the United States exited the Second World War and continued to grow as a major influencer and super power into the Cold War Era, American culture and society became increasingly more so materialistic. The alien leader attempts to smuggle out his discovered secrets (10:56). Upon return, he crash lands (11:27). He informs the people of Mars, oil is the secret product which is enhanced through competition (11:49). The leader rejects the idea of competition (12:11). Martian oil exporters set t work (12:22).Cosmic and Ogg have a row (12:49) as Cosmic is now smitten by the idea of competition in economy (12:49). The film concludes (13:10) promoting the idea energy and competition leads to unlimited progress. The film was produced by the American Petroleum Industry (13:17).  Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
