<description>This film is of the weekly series ‘Industry on Parade’ which received a Peabody Award for public service (:26). It focuses on breakfast and how industry has made the first meal of the day easier and cost efficient for the American family (1:03). An example of one of these innovations is the toaster (1:32). In an appliance mass producing factory, a worker makes toast over and over, tossing it into a bin ‘for toast only’ to ensure the quality (1:47). Another example shown is how stove top cooking had been made automatic with the use of a bulb filled with fluid (2:05) and when the liquid is cooled it contracts and turns up the flame (2:09). A cool pot is placed on the range and the flame jets up (2:20) and a hot is placed on the same range which then contracts the flame. Skilled potters make ceramic cups for coffee and tea (2:36) in Syracuse, New York and later handles are added (2:59). These cups are then placed in a kiln (3:07) in which they will be heated and cooled gradually (3:23). Before the glaze is added, a woman checks the cups for any flaws (3:37). They will travel back into the kiln and will have a decal added after (3:44). For the final step, a gold rim is painted on (3:54). Food products themselves were being improved as at a research farm (4:11) a device that’s sole purpose is to test the strength of an egg shell is shown (4:17). At a round table, men are tasting coffee to determine the proper blend of beans (4:34). The roasting times of the beans depend on their color (4:54) and they are later sent through the grinder (5:04). Some will travel through further processes which will churn out instant coffee. At the Pepperidge Farm’s bakery, machines bake loaves in large supply (6:12). The cereal Puffed Wheat is shown being shot like a gun and dropping to the floor (7:17). Grains that are not the proper size are shown sifted out (7:26) and the rest move to a spray treatment of vitamins (7:46). In the packaging room, machines fill boxes with a specific amount (8:19) and they are pressed and sealed (8:43). In a Minnesota packing plant, meats are being loaded into a refrigerated truck (8:54). These perishables will be delivered to the market (9:09). Buyers arrive at midnight to check the fresh fruit (9:29) and these will be delivered to New York in the morning. Bidding wars over the fruits are depicted and the price trends are tracked here (10:16). Butter is cut from 60lb bulk form into convenient sizes for the consumer (10:58). Milk bottles are washed and refilled (11:33). Supplee Sealtest Dairy Products is seen on the milkman’s truck as he arrives to pick up the milk and deliver it to the front doors of homes (12:09). This film has been a service of the National Association of Manufactures (13:21).
