At 2:26, Horne addresses the camera: "So well fellas I hope the hundreds of guys that requested Honeysuckle Rose, were listening in. Whether I'm making with my sort of breathless style or whether you're giving it your own Crosby touch -- well I've done it my way. So come on now how's the about busting out like you got enough point, and about a million bucks in your hometown bank. All set? Well let's go!" There follows a "bouncing ball" with lyrics, for sing-along purposes. At 4:56, Horne takes a break and fans herself. "Well fellas, " she excalims, "now that your temperatures are a little higher how about us doing some singing while our ears are still ringing huh? I'm going to start off with a little diddy about a certain character from Kalamazoo. Now don't you let me down when it's time for you! Come on Jimmy!" Horne then launches into "I've Got A Guy In Kalamazoo", a song made famous by the Andrews Sisters. At 6:46, the bouncing ball returns with the song lyrics. Lena Horne performed with Jimmie Lunceford's band at the Cotton Club starting in 1934. Originally, Horne started at the Cotton Club as a chorus girl at age 16 and sang "Sweeter than Sweet" with Cab Calloway. Lunceford's band took over at the club after Calloway's orchestra left in 1934. Lena Mary Calhoun Horne (June 30, 1917 – May 9, 2010) was an American singer, actress, dancer and civil rights activist. Horne's career spanned more than seventy years and covered film, television and theatre. Horne joined the chorus of the Cotton Club at the age of sixteen and became a nightclub performer before moving on to Hollywood and Broadway. A groundbreaking African-American performer, Horne advocated for civil rights and took part in the March on Washington in August 1963. Later she returned to her roots as a nightclub performer and continued to work on television while releasing well-received record albums. She announced her retirement in March 1980, but the next year starred in a one-woman show, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, which ran for more than 300 performances on Broadway. She then toured the country in the show, earning numerous awards and accolades. Horne continued recording and performing sporadically into the 1990s, retreating from the public eye in 2000. James Melvin Lunceford was an American jazz alto saxophonist and bandleader in the swing era. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
