The program is hosted by Bill Owen and Virginia Gibson. David Chethlahe Paladin was an extremely influential artist through his contributions to modern Native American art. Paladin was born in 1926 on a Navajo reservation in Arizona. The film opens with a young Navajo boy chopping at wood with an ax (:14) somewhere in the Painted Desert in Northern Arizona. David Paladin is first pictured (:25) just prior to the title screen (1:02). Bill Owens and Virginia Gibson narrate and host the episode. Students are seen in class at Tuba City Boarding School used for children arriving from Navajo reservations too far to be reached by school buses (1:55). Paladin’s infamous painting known as “Nativity” is shown (4:13) which had been selected by UNICEF. His signature is zoomed in on to show the word Chethlahe (5:39) meaning little turtle. Paladin’s artistic process follows as he works on a piece inspired by and old pictograph discovered on a cave wall in the four corners area of the Navajo Reservation (6:34). He is shown using sand which had traditionally been used in Native American art for ceremonies aimed at curing the sick and for warding off of evil spirits (7:45). Other works of his include the ‘Standing Cow’ (8:09). Paladin today resides in a suburban home in Prescott, Arizona (9:37). Images follow of Canyon de Chelly on the Navajo reservation in Arizona where Paladin was born (9:46). Raymond Yellow, a 15-year-old Navajo boy is pictured working on his family’s farmland in Gray Mountain, Arizona (10:47). He goes to school at the Tuba City Boarding school (10:55). The boy herds sheep (11:02) as his family has been sheepherders for over 100 years. The dark side of reservation life is noted as not more than half of those residing on the reservation will be able to find livelihood on the desert Navajo lands (11:46). Mrs. Yellow works to prepare food for the large family (11:56). They work on preparing the traditional mutton (12:10). The traditional single-family home called hogans of the Navajo people is depicted (13:28). The Yellow family has two homes on their land; one to be used for the summer months (14:01) and the other for once the weather turns cold (14:10). Raymond’s younger sister named Evalyn is pictured (14:56). Navajo boys play basketball on a court at the Tuba City Boarding school where they are taught to be more competitive (15:38). Evalyn is pictured again here at school in her beginners’ class (16:02). Students of the eighth-grade study language and grammar in class (17:45). Young students move down the cafeteria lunch line (18:38). The film then turns to provide a promotional segment for UNICEF (19:38). Selected readings are shown to further the education of viewers (20:48). This episode was filmed in cooperation with the UN’S Children’s Fund (22:03). It was a Jules Power Production in association with ABC News (22:12). We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment!
