The films were created from the 1890’s to 1947 featuring clips of actual newsreel footage combined with modern narration designed to educate the public on fashion, sports, celebrities and issues on the war at front. This episode begins in 1910-1950 to look at the early years and history of the boy scouts of America. It also features the Ziegfeld follies; the original showgirls. Sir Baden Powell arrives in DC in 1910 (:21) with his wife was at his right. Powell authored the first additions of seminal work for scouting for the boys which formed the British Boy Scouts (:32). US Scouts flap their hats (:36). James West is pictured as the US first leader (:38). Daniel Carter Beard is first commissioner (:46). He wears the famed fur cap and clothes as he delivers instruction for the young scouts (:51). Taft accepted honorary presidency of the organization. Scouts deliver speeches to crowds during the First World War and post war period (1:13). Mayor of New York; Jimmy Walker, in 1926 delivers a medal to a young scout (1:27). He stands with a furry screen star (1:36) ‘Rin Tin Tin’. In Fairmount, New York (1:45) a mass of scouts sprint for mess call. Native Americans practice a ritual (2:07) for the scouts. Boys jump from a board as they learn to swim and dive (2:15). Early screen star Mary Pickford watches as husband Douglas Fairbanks dukes it out with Boy Scouts (2:21). Scouts march in Washington in 1922 (2:40) for a disarmament conference. Secretary Hughes delivers the boys a praise for their efforts (2:45). Scouts are awarded commemorative flags (2:52). The boys make a trip to Copenhagen in 1924 (3:00) for the celebration of the Second World Jamboree. Baron Collier, Al Smith and Admiral Byrd joined the celebration (3:17). Smith puts on an Indian headdress (3:27). Admiral Byrd chooses a scout to join his expedition to the South Pole (3:42). Scouts march in England (3:54) in 1929 past prince of whales and Powell (3:58). Harry S. Truman (4:08) reads a report to the nation on the 40 year history of scouting. In Berlin 1928 (4:28), elastic bumpers are featured. The car hits a tree and the bumper bounces back (4:34). It collides with a pedestrian (4:46). In 1925, Nelly Taylor Ross (5:06) became the chief executive of Wyoming after the death of her husband (5:13). Retired lightweight champ Benny Leonard (5:26) exercises to stay in shape for role as businessman. Benny appears at work (5:38). Former singer performer of the Ziegfeld follies; Mary Sybil Lewis (5:52) runs through central park New York. Lewis performs at the Metropolitan Opera (5:58). Mississippi River mud is featured in 1937. Ships and concrete docks rest against each other mangled in the New Orleans shipyards (6:27). Pressurized water shoots up from hatches (6:39). The Second Fiddle Convention plays in 1926 (6:59) in Maine. Fiddlers strum a bow (7:12). President Calvin Coolige’s Uncle John (7:30) plays for the camera. A purse is awarded to a Bostonian winner (7:47). Aviation history in 1935 (7:52) begins at the Alhambra Airport (8:02). Captain Edwin Musick (8:10) readies himself, the China Clipper and team for a historic flight. Ground support refuels the craft (8:12). It shoots off over the surface of the water (8:22). Ground crews pull the land wheels away (8:27). Shots from within the cockpit (8:35) follow as the transoceanic flight heads for Hawaii, Manila and the Philippines. Fashions from 1923 (8:55) includes funny decorations painted onto girls knees (9:14). Sports history of 1934 includes a female derby sprint (10:02) in England. The winner cuts through the crowd (10:46). Scooters zip over the Schuylkill River (11:02) for a 6,000 dollar purse. A driver survives after a crash (11:32). The winner of the (11:42) 1929 champion of the Philadelphia Outboard Regatta is awarded. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
