It features four segments of historic highlights. Marines Help Haiti 1915-1920. Port-Au-Prince Haiti is shown in 1915. The streets of the marketplace are crowded with people. An American flag is raised by U.S. Marines. A band marches. The Marines practice drills with guns, play horseshoes, and box. Lines of hungry people are fed. President Sudre Dartigue smiles and is transported by carriage. Troops of the Palace Guard march. The Marines sit under a thatched roof tent in 1920. Marines ride in an open car through water to question locals. Some captured bandits are shown. Prisoners learn trades. Marines are accused of misconduct but cleared. The troops withdraw by boat in 1934 (:38-4:30). Tall and Short of It 1928. Extreme height friends shown are both 21 years old: Lew Gordon is 8’ tall while George Brown is 2’2” tall (4:34-5:08). Three Million Dollar Gold Medal 1920. 15-year-old Pauline Hinklereceives a gold medal from National Commander Frederic Galbraith of the American Legion for her sale of over $3M in Liberty Bonds. Her medal is shown up-close (5:12-5:46). Personalities Early 1920s Inventor Lee de Forest shakes hands with composer Hugo Riesenfeld. Lee invented Audion, an electronic amplifying vacuum tube, and was known as a pioneer in television (5:54-6:08). A French comedy actress, hugged by a giant shaggy dog, visits America (6:10-6:29). Samuel L. Rothafel, known as Roxy, smiles for the camera. He was a theatre manager and sponsor of the ‘Roxies Gang’ radio program (6:30-5:46).
