For over 300 years, Covent Garden Market was London's premier flower, fruit and vegetable market. Today, while there are no longer stalls selling fresh produce and flowers, the area remains a popular commercial center and tourist destination in central London. Film opens, certification from British Board of Film Censors (f. 1912, today British Board of Film Classification) (0:07). Montage scenes of farmhands gathering and preparing produce to be transported to market: Lettuce, roses, mushrooms (0:11). 1950s Fordson Thames truck picks up produce from farm in Sussex (0:59). Truck driving at night through country towns and small cities on way to London; British National Anthem “God Save the Queen” plays on radio (2:41). Workers begin arriving in early morning hours at Covent Garden, whistling and other noises punctuate the background as workers set up their produce stands (4:09). Some workers help unload boxes of cut daffodils from Jersey Islands, other flowers from France and rest of England (5:27). Bill, a night man at one of the flower stands, helps unload trolley that transports flowers from the truck unloading station to the stand inside the market area (6:04). Camaraderie among vendors, police who sit together for cup of tea while market stalls come to life (7:16). 1950s Fordson Thames truck from earlier arrives at Covent Garden from Sussex with delivery of mushrooms, roses, and lettuce; Packages carefully unloaded onto trolley and stacked in market area before being set out for sale (7:51). One man whistles a patriotic tune, others sort boxes with cigarettes dangling from their month; Frenetic energy of market in early hours of day (10:26). Stalls are set up, market ready to go at around 4:30 AM; Night men wait for final deliveries and arrival of vendors (14:50). Daytime brings more hustle and bustle, traffic of new lorries delivering more goods for market from local farms in Kent etc; Produce consists of cabbage, potatoes (21:29). Previously quiet and empty flower market filled with buyers; Vendors hurriedly tend to customers (23:36). Older woman, Alice, the only remaining female porter in the marketplace, balances a few crates of fresh flowers on her head as she walks briskly before helping to load them into delivery vehicle (25:40). Street traders load their trolleys, navigate tight turns and foot traffic of the marketplace (26:11). Men carry boxes of goods to waiting vans (27:34). Porter bravely weaves through oncoming traffic of vehicles, double-decker buses (perhaps 1950 AEC RT double decker) (28:30). Local cafe busy with patrons who had been shopping at market, cups of coffee and small sausage sandwiches (28:40). Morning rush over 10:30 AM, some porters, Alice seen resting (29:25). Later in day old ladies come to take advantage of cheaper prices, buy flowers to sell in the London streets (30:47). 11 AM the market quiet, only rubbish and imperfect produce left; Street band plays "Happy Wanderers" while lorries loaded with goods for out of town and others unloaded with produce for next day’s market (32:30). Lorries set out on road, montage doors of lorries with names of different farms, faces of porters and vendors etc. (34:27). End (36:44).
