Kronick, "The Intervention" was produced on behalf of the Johnson Institute, which was founded by Dr. Vernon Johnson who developed the Johnson Model of intervention. An intervention is an orchestrated attempt by one or many people – usually family and friends – to get someone to seek professional help with a substance use disorder. The Johnson Model focuses on creating a confrontation between a group of supporters and the addict in order to expose the addict to the consequences of their addiction. The confrontation serves to precipitate a crisis in the addict's life that is not threatening, damaging, or fatal, and is used to compel them into treatment before they are able to suffer irreparable social or physical damage as a result of their disease. This film follows the journey of Jan, who is increasingly retreating into alcohol, and her family's efforts to intervene before she hits rock bottom. The film stars Kathy Thornton as Jan, James Noah as her husband Howard, and Don Amendolia as the counselor. • 0:28: Jan retreats into alcohol, and her spouse Howard realizes the need to bring her back to reality and get her to agree to treatment. • 1:11: Discussion between Howard and a friend about involving the children in the intervention, despite their reluctance. • 2:01: Howard questions if they are overreacting, but acknowledges Jan's drinking problem. • 2:23: The husband talks to their teen son, Brian, about the need for intervention. • 3:01: Brian is reluctant but agrees to help with the intervention. • 4:03: Howard discusses the intervention plan with his daughter, who agrees to help. • 6:00: The counselor explains alcoholism as a disease and the importance of treatment. • 7:01: The family learns about alcoholism and its impact on them. • 8:01: Jan reacts defensively when confronted about her drinking. • 9:00: Jan temporarily improves, leading the spouse to doubt the severity of her problem. • 10:00: The counselor advises the family to document specific incidents of Jan's drinking. • 11:00: The spouse documents Jan's drinking episodes and their impact. • 12:01: Jan is found drinking again, leading to further concern. • 13:00: The counselor prepares the family for the intervention. • 14:00: The family discusses who should speak first during the intervention. • 15:00: The intervention begins, with each family member expressing their concerns. • 18:00: The family expresses their love and concern for Jan, urging her to seek help. • 19:00: Jan initially resists but eventually agrees to attend the meeting.
