https://peertube.dngr.us/videos/watch/b7bec16b-9fd9-4e26-b3da-b200c31c615d This video shows the Kitt Peak (Arizona) National Observatory's observation of the IRM satellite's release of barium thermite into the earth's magnetotail, one of several experiments in the AMPTE (Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorer) program. AMPTE was a trilateral project (USA, UK, and Germany) with the aim of studying the solar wind and initiating the first artificial comet. It consisted of three sub-satellites: CCE, IRM and UKS. From the abstract of the referenced journal publication: "Injections of Li and Ba plasmas in the solar wind and geomagnetic tail constitute the active element of the AMPTE mission. The scientific objectives are twofold: ion tracing and the study of the interaction of two vastly different plasmas in space." The observations were made on 21 March 1985 by G. Haerendel, with image processing by H. Hoefner. The final video was produced in 1989 by the Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik. Sound is an unknown work of classical music. This NTSC VHS dub is from the personal collection of solar physicist Ted Speiser (1934–2016). It was digitized to Lagarith AVI and transcoded to H.264 MP4 in 2020.
