This film was rescued by one of our fans, Ted Mikolaski, and isn't in the best shape -- but it sure is fascinating! It dates to 1955 and features the Boeing Stratocruiser aircraft which was in service with the airline at that time. Pan American World Airways, originally founded as Pan American Airways and more commonly known as Pan Am, was an airline that was the principal and largest international air carrier and unofficial overseas flag carrier of the United States for much of the 20th century. • 0:13: Pan American completed its 49,999th Atlantic crossing. • 1:05: 50,000 people attend stadiums almost every week. • 1:29: An aircraft has crossed the Atlantic 50,000 times, carrying passengers and cargo safely and comfortably. • 2:00: Admiral John Towers piloted the first successful transatlantic flight in 1919. • 2:26: René Fonk attempted a nonstop flight from New York to Paris in 1926 but crashed on takeoff. • 2:39: French pilots Charles Nesser and François Col attempted a transatlantic flight in 1927 but disappeared. • 3:01: Charles Lindbergh's solo nonstop flight from New York to Paris in 1927 opened the doors to transatlantic air travel. • 3:41: In 1939, Pan American's Atlantic Clipper began the first joint mail and passenger service across the North Atlantic. • 4:07: World War II increased public confidence in aviation. • 5:02: The history of 50,000 successful transatlantic flights reflects the progress in aviation safety and technology. • 6:20: Aircraft undergo rigorous inspections and preparations to ensure safety and efficiency. • 7:40: Modern aircraft such as the Stratocruiser can comfortably carry more than 70 passengers. • 8:28: The plane prepares for takeoff. • 9:03: Four engines lift more than 65 tons, developing 14,000 horsepower. • 9:17: Another of the 50,000 incident-free takeoffs occurs. • 9:22: Contact and control are maintained via radiotelephone. • 9:49: The plane flies 5 miles above the ground on a circular route through the North Atlantic. • 10:01: Radar installations in Northern Canada monitor the flight. • 10:09: Onboard radar shows what lies ahead. • 10:18: Towers in Greenland and Iceland provide contact if necessary. • 10:38: The plane flies over the North Atlantic at over 300 miles per hour. • 11:06: The plane flies over London, completing another safe and comfortable crossing. • 11:51: The Super Douglas D-7 will offer even greater range, speed, and safety. • 12:05: The airline has conquered the ocean 50,000 times, promoting trade, fraternity, peace, and prosperity. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Contact us via the weblink below. This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
