Hedwig’s musical adaptation of "Alice in Wonderland" (1930), produced by John W. Considine. This film is actually a segment from the 1930 film "Puttin' on the Ritz", with music by Irving Berlin, and with some segments shot in two strip Technicolor. These segments only survive today in black-and-white. The film was directed by Edward Sloman and starred (in addition to Bennett) Harry Richman and James Gleason. Joan Bennett was an American Actress who appeared in more than seventy silent films. The roles she is most recognized and remembered for are her roles as a noir femme fatale, which she did under the direction of Fritz Lang. Notably, she was in Man Hunt (1941), The Woman in the Window (1944), and Scarlet Street (1945). Alice In Wonderland musical sheet is shown on screen (0:37). The camera pans back to show the audience and the theater opening its curtain (1:00). The set of the play is shown in full (1:06). Joan Bennett as Alice is shown (1:07). She is shown reading the book Alice In Wonderland (1:14). Alice gets up from her chair and looks in the mirror (1:28). The mirror shows her clouds (1:38). The camera gives a close up of Alice (1:40). Alice is rubbing the mirror with her hand (1:53). She walks through the mirror (2:03). People in costumes are seen dancing on what appears to be a giant chessboard (2:04). Alice joins them (2:06). Another close up of Alice (2:17). Closer view of the people in costumes as they are dancing away from Alice (2:25). The White Rabbit appears on screen (2:40). People in costumes dancing with mountains behind them (3:01). Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-dum are dancing on screen with Alice (2:47). They dance without Alice (2:52). Three people dressed as the Queen of Hearts are dancing in sequence (3:11). Humpty Dumpty appears on screen (3:14). Humpty Dumpty falls (3:19). Mad Hatter appears on screen at (3:27). The Cheshire Cat is shown dancing (3:37). A person dressed up as a Walrus is shown (3:40). The Dormouse is shown on screen (3:44). Alice and the cat are shown on screen (3:45). Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-dum get a closeup (3:49). The Queen of Hearts is shown closeup (3:52). The camera pans back over to Mad Hatter finishing his dance (4:02). The Cheshire Cat joins him in the back (4:08). The White Rabbit and the puppy are shown play fighting (4:20). The Mad Hatter does magic tricks to impress Alice (4:31). Both begin dancing together, accompanied by cards (4:41). They are shown on the steps up to where Humpty Dumpty was (4:59). The people are dressed as playing cards are dancing (5:13). The dancers split down the middle to show the group talking on the stairs (5:26). The camera pans out to show the entire stage and all of the characters (5:35). The group is shown on the stairs with four of the people dressed up as cards with their backs to the camera (5:54). Alice has a closeup shot (5:56). Mad Hatter and Alice dance down the stage (6:06). They dance over to the people dressed as cards, then switch sides, then they go back to the group (6:12). The King of Hearts dances on the stage (6:19). Alice is crowned (6:25). She is escorted down the steps and through the stage, holding the White Rabbit and the Mad Hatter’s hands, followed by the group (6:36). The stage closes, Alices room is shown, and the mirror returns to normal (6:52). A cat is shown by an unlit fireplace (7:02). The entire theater and audience are shown (7:06). The curtains close and the audience claps and cheers (7:18). Joan Bennett comes on stage as Alice and takes a bow to the audience (7:22).
