It follows the plight of one family as the mother struggles with debilitating alcoholism. It traces her rocky recovery from outpatient to inpatient treatment centers displaying the various stages of addiction and recovery. This film was created with cooperation of Lynnville (:23). Opening scenes show a family fight as the father finds booze and prescription pills hidden in the house (:58). Parents argue over substance use as the young child rouses from her sleep (1:23). Their son enters the room (1:50) as the argument moves to accusation of infidelity (2:17). The son interjects with useful knowledge about the behavior of an alcoholic (3:01) from information he learned at school. The father meets with a counselor (4:21). At the meeting the consular utilizes charts to detail the effects of alcohol (5:00). Solutions are explored (6:29) including treatment. A scene plays out of the wife going to court (7:13) for a sentence of treatment at a psychiatric center (7:23). Other options include halfway houses (8:04) and private treatment centers. The film then turns to show the process the mother undergoes to ready herself for treatment (8:55). Prior to leaving, she finds herself trapped in the mirror listening to the cyclic internal judgement of her family over her sickness. Due to an inability to cope, she chooses; rather easily, to self-medicate (10:05). At the center, the head of the program details her own past with substance abuse (11:13) mirroring that of the patient's. She stops in the restroom to take a swig (12:59) from a flask in her purse as the director catches her. She purchases booze at a liquor store (13:20) to use as a new stash supply (13:57). She gets intoxicated at home with a bottle and her inhibitions degenerate (14:42). Slow motion footage follows her moving through her home (15:58) and falls asleep on the steps (16:17). In the morning her husband announces they were taking her to an inpatient treatment center (16:35). At the center she meets with a nurse over withdraw symptoms (17:14). She meets with her counselor (17:24). At a meeting, peers suffering with alcoholism discuss the disease (18:19). At a meeting Jan offers a small amount of honesty about her drinking problem (18:51). The speaker explains tolerance, emotional masking, peer pressure in social settings and the path of addiction (20:54). In an open field, a consular discusses the twelve steps of the AA program (25:59). Jan's condition begins to improve as she discusses an inability to love and accept love (27:19). Jan readies herself to return home (27:49). An emotional return home closes the film (28:33).  This was a Russell Manning production (29:06) produced by James Michael and photographed and edited by Gregory Cummins. It was written and directed by Gary Lindberg. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
