Esso is a brand of Exxonmobile primarily used by its predecessor, Standard Oil of NJ following the disintegration of Standard Oil in 1911. By 1972, Esso was replaced by Exxon. The 1960’s brought a wave of new science and research into oil and petrochemistry especially into the development of new plastics. The film aims to dispel mysteries surrounding oil and it’s derivatives in order to promote their continued use driving a message oil and it’s products have brought transformative change into industry and consumer life. Molecular processes used to produce materials including synthetic ropes, rubbers, house hold detergents and plastic roads are explored. It touches upon pollution while offering few solutions. It includes images from an aromatics plant in Botlek Rotterdam, a shipyard housing the Esso Tampa and explores the expansion of the distribution infrastructure. It was produced by Esso Research and Engineering Company (:11). The title screen follows (:23) leading into mysticisms over molecules. While the concept of molecules have long since been understood; the first molecule had not been seen by the human eye until 2009 through IBM’s innovative work (:37). Children play with examples of petrochemistry products including balloons (:43), inner tubes (:51) and hula hoops (:54). A woman grabs a Bond Bread loaf wrapped in plastic at the grocery store highlighting significant changes plastics have delivered to the food industry (1:04). Bond Bread was a prominent 1960’s bread brand produced by General Baking Co. Other areas affected include space exploration (1:29) and the medical field (1:36). Wire produced with oil derivatives are shaped by a processing machine (1:43). Narration highlights a major shift in industry as the US began to produce raw materials through manipulation of matter within oil. Oil workers operate an oil rig (2:08). The chemical makeup of oil is dissected (2:09). Oil refineries and their duties in the process follow (2:28). Shots of pipework show two of oil’s variants (250); kerosine and diesel (2:52). The awareness nature once played the sole role in shaping these molecules and that this new technology enabled humans to re-arrange them (3:01) to produce their own matter is acknowledged. Plastics in textiles follow (3:08). Twisting machines produced synthetic fibers (3:08). Lobster trappers use man made ropes (3:25). Polypropylene rope tugs the (3:34) Esso Tampa, originally built in 1962 as Esso Zurich, later renamed Esso Tampa. In 1964, it was sold as the Sea Pioneer and continued to be resold and renamed until it was scrapped in 1982. Esso Tugboats transport barges to refuel larger vessels (3:38). Spools of polypropylene rope follow (3:41). Nylon rope (3:50) tugs a vessel. Plastic water pipes (3:59) are used at construction sites. Ships get a layer of (4:29) petrochemical paint. Plastic buttons (5:00) and synthetic thread are produced (5:04). Plastic shoes appear on sale in Africa (5:30). Narration addresses the relatively new history of petrochemistry (5:45). Man made rubber (6:05) is formed. Rubber tires spin on a 1960’s GMC Fishbowl (6:21). The issue of pollution is touched upon as detergent foam fills a river (638), natural bacteria cannot break down the synthetics. Technicians experiment with atomic radiation (7:09). A 1950’s Chevrolet Bel Air drives down plastic roads (8:05). A boy is injected using a plastic hypodermic needle (10:12). Petrochemistry products are implemented in agriculture (10:44) for feed for livestock and fertilizers. Plastic appears in cars (11:16), printing press ink (11:21), sun tan lotion and sports equipment (11:5). New fuel types emerged (13:24); images of the SR.N1 Saunders-Roe follow; the first practical hovercraft invented through work conducted by Christopher Cockerell. John Glenn wears a plastic space suit (13:39). Mayor Robert Wagner mans a float in the March 1st,1962 NYC parade for Glenn (13:57). Credits: Pendulum Productions (14:23) director Gene Searchinger, Louis San Andres, editor (14:27). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
