This film shows off AMF's enormous production capabilities and high tech (for the 1960s) assembly lines, which include not only the packaging of cigarettes but also the manufacture of bowling balls, golf equipment, etc. This film is aimed at U.S. government contracts, with images of missile launches and defense industry. AMF was one of the USA's largest recreational equipment companies, with diversified products as disparate as garden equipment, atomic reactors, and yachts. In 1985, AMF was acquired through hostile takeover by Minstar Inc., and its various divisions sold off. 0:00 AMF has 60 years of experience as a designer and producer of complex automatic machinery. 1:05 AMF's machinery is created to increase output, decrease operating costs, perform complex tasks, and achieve product uniformity across nearly every industry. 1:28 Products include the "Orbit" tire retreading machine, automated baked goods wrapping machines and equipment for manufacturing and packaging cigarettes and cigars. 1:51 AMF's technology extends to new processes for fresh water sources and sports gear. 2:21 AMF's GPG serves the defense effort by combining research, engineering, production, and field activation units into an integrated force 3:38 The GPG's laboratories and shops 4:12 AMF designed the launcher system hardware for the U.S. Air Force's Titan and Atlas missile (ICBM) programs. 5:22 AMF developed a lightweight, mobile, air-transportable launcher for the Army's Sergeant missile. 5:48 AMF developed ground support equipment, including guide rail and roller conveyor installations for easy transfer of palletized cargo, a 40,000lb capacity loader that pitches and rolls with the aircraft, and a Universal Lift Vehicle for cabin service and food handling. 7:26 A unique, automated, and safe shell loading line for 75mm and 90mm shells is monitored by one man at a control console. 7:56 AMF developed an auxiliary propelled 155mm howitzer to increase "man-weapon mobility." 9:12 The AMVAP system provides pure drinking water for an army on the move. 10:01 AMF is involved in hydrospace research, including development of the Mark 44 acoustic homing torpedo and applying resources to strengthen the nation's ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) defense. 10:34 AMF created splice cases for the Minuteman missile system to link the control room and silos. They also designed blast closure valves for ventilating systems that close in 75 milliseconds when triggered by a nuclear radiation sensor. 11:25 AMF developed new tools for America's astronauts, including a remotely operated wrench with oversized handles for pressurized gloves. Most notably, they engineered a special catwalk egress system for the Mercury Atlas pad at Cape Canaveral, designed, fabricated, and installed in only six weeks for Colonel John Glenn's historic orbital flight. 12:37 AMF developed the Precision Instrument Mount, a portable, accurate, and versatile system for field use that tracks data on film or digital disc. They also detail the large, 11-ton SCR-270 antenna with sector scan that can withstand 100 mph winds and detect targets up to 250 nautical miles. Finally, the massive 80-ton antenna mounts for Mobile Atlantic Range Stations (MARS) are shown for tracking ballistic missiles and manned orbital missions. 14:37 AMF Atomics provides "turnkey nuclear reactor facilities" and associated handling systems. Examples include an on-power reactor refueling system (for CANDU reactors), extended reach manipulators, seal weld cutters that re-weld remotely, and a remote milling machine. A prototype for a remotely operated fuel handling system that operates under 20 feet of water is also shown. 17:02 The film concludes by highlighting "motivation" as a vital role in management, ensuring every project member is aware of objectives and working toward an "important cause." The control room at GPG headquarters is the nerve center for complex programs, and the electronic data processing center (featuring an IBM 1410 computer) uses PERT programming. 18:44 The Government Products Group is "able to meet the constant challenge of tomorrow." This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
