This Cold War era Soviet propaganda film shows a brief history of the Soviet Revolution with images of the Civil War, before launching into a discussion of the long rebuilding efforts that followed the Socialist victory. It then discusses some of the economic development plans that resulted in prosperity in the 1930s in the USSR. Narration: ‘A revolution is only worth something if it can defend itself’, Lenin said those days. The working people of Russia, who had just recently come to peace, resorted to arms again. The Soviet Republic was not alone in this unequal battle. 'Hands off Russia!’ 'Proletarians! A general strike!' Proletarians of Europe replied with angry meetings and protests of solidarity to the interference with the internal affairs of Russia. (01.07) But the people's army had the final word. The Red Army broke the blockade and started pushing the enemy, going on the offensive. (01.45) ‘The dictatorship of the proletariat is not merely the use of violence against the exploiters and it is not even mainly the use of violence', said Lenin. (02.00) The main goal of the dictatorship of the proletariat was the creation of a socialist society. But how do you create socialism in a backwards, downfallen, and starving country? (02.20) Lenin gave an answer to that question. Industrialization, collectivization, and cultural revolution are the main steps towards the socialist reform of Russia according to Lenin. (02.40) But such an industry had to be created from scratch, with one’s own hands and mind, under constant threat of an intervention. They needed to hurry, being faster than time. The whole country hastened. (03.30) The first construction projects were the glorious firstborns of the Soviet industry. They became a legend, just like people: Alexei Stakhanov, a miner from Donetsk, gave name to the movement for high productivity; Nikolai Smetanin, the first Stakhanovite of the shoe industry; the Vinogradov sisters, the first weavers operating several machines simultaneously; and thousands of others who proved by their own example that human labor can become an everyday feat. (04.23) The first two five-year plans were fulfilled in eight and a half years. 6,000 large industrial enterprises began operations. (04.53) Collectivization was the second step in Lenin’s plan of a socialist re-organization of Russia, through the unification of minor private peasant farms into large shared farmsteads. The first cooperatives, agricultural associations, and communes appeared during the years of the civil war. Since the autumn of 1929, the majority of peasants voted for collective farms, impressed by many successful examples and in spite of sabotage by kulaks. (06.02) Lenin dreamed of providing the villages with 100,000 tractors. By the autumn of 1936, there were 400,000 tractors in Soviet villages. (06.48) The opening of the Great Fergana Canal was an important celebration for the whole Uzbek nation. (07.26) Now, let’s take a walk across any Russian city or town and look at the people. Who are these people? What is their social status? Since Communism has been established in the country, our society only consist of working people, collective farmers, and people's intelligentsia. Each of us knows that. But does everyone know what the proportions of these social groups are? The general population of our country nowadays is almost 237 million people. More than ¾ of them are workers, only a quarter are collective farmers and craftsmen. (08.28) 27 million are the army of the people’s intelligentsia. (08.37) How was the situation 30 years ago? Back then, in the mid-30s, the government of the proletarian dictatorship was already promoting the interests of the workers, peasants, and working intelligentsia. It means that that government began transforming into an all-people’s government. (09.42) A question may rise: if class antagonism was eliminated in our country thirty years ago, why do we still have a government?
