Slater's Mill in Pawtucket, RI, built in 1793, is a textile mill complex on the banks of the Blackstone River. It was modeled after cotton spinning mills. Children enter the building. Women spin cotton fibers (:22-2:55). A man plows with a  horse. A ship. Embargo Act paper from the Tenth Congress of the United States. A water wheel spins and water flows. Francis Cabot Lowell points at a paper sketch to other men who listen. A cotton gin machine. Piles of cotton. A loom machine weaves cloth (2:56-4:30). Paperwork from a Tariff Act and the Fourteenth Congress of the U.S. Horses and men walk by. Water flows in a river. A map of New England. The Blackstone River, Merrimack River are pointed out. New England farm girls walk with men behind them. The men are Irish immigrants, who chat (4:31-6:07). A man uses a turret lathe, which is a form of metalworking lathe that is used for repetitive production of duplicate parts. He also uses a vernier caliper, which helps take an accurate measurement reading between two graduation markings on a linear scale by using mechanical interpolation; thereby increasing resolution and reducing measurement uncertainty. A woman uses a sewing machine in the 1860s. Her hands move the cloth under the needle. A needle is replaced by the woman. A steamship boat floats on a  river. A train goes down the tracks. A smoke stack at a factory. A man shovels coal into an open furnace (6:08-7:58). Iron production. Factory machinery, a train moves down the tracks. A reaper is used on a farm. It moves and chops grain as people move alongside it. Cities shown on a  map of the U.S. include: Philadelphia, New York, Providence, Fall River, Patterson, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Rochester, and Chicago. A man works in a factory on a  machine. A man works current day in a  factory. A woman in the old days works with a hand spinning wheel machine.
