The film also includes a discussion of Commodore Perry's voyage to Japan, which opened that country to the West. The documentary also shows how United States' policy reflected America's growth from the status of a small and weak nation to its position as a world industrial power. This is one in a series of four film intended to serve as contribution to the Bicentennial by the State Dept. The film was directed by Paul Auerswald.
