The film begins with footage of a Pacific typhoon (0:30) that affected the U.S. Third Fleet commanded by Admiral Bull Halsey. The Pittsburgh cruiser braves 100-ft tall waves and high winds at the center of the typhoon (0:41) as it loses its bow. The “Enterprise”carrier fights off a Kamikaze attack during action off Kyushu, Japan, in May (1:16). Kamikaze planes drop bombs that hit the carrier (2:02); the crew races to put out a fire on deck. Colonel General Alfred Jodl, Nazi Chief of Staff, arrives at General Eisenhower’s headquarters in Reims, France to surrender the remaining German Armed Forces to the Allies on May 7, 1945 (2:39). General Jodl sits at a table with Admiral Friedeburg to his left and Major General Wilhelm Reich on his right (2:58). Delegates from America, Russia, Britain, and France also sign the surrender document (3:15), marking the end of World War II. Title card: “Japan Surrenders” (3:22). General Douglas MacArthur speaks at the Japanese surrender (3:39). Japanese envoys Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and General Yoshijiro Umezu sign the instrument of surrender, which took place on the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945 (3:57). Title card: “War Heroes come home!” (4:10); a “Welcome General Eisenhower” sign (4:11) as Eisenhower rides in a homecoming procession. A “Tokyo, Nimitz Sea, Pearl Harbor” banner (4:54) as spectators cheer as Mayor LaGuardia declares the Admiral an honorary New Yorker. Title card: “The Proximity Fuse” (5:21). Animation shows the differences in a contact bomb vs. a delayed action bomb vs. a VT proximity fuse bomb explosion (5:45). VT proximity fuse bombs, first used at Iwo Jima, exploded in the air once in the zone of sensitivity, helping in airborne rocket and anti-aircraft fights. Diagram shows the zone of sensitivity for VT bombs (6:22). Title card: “Radar” (6:53). Animation showing radar waves (7:01) and how they are used to chart and follow approaching planes. A Navy scout plane detects the presence of an enemy fleet on its radar (7:19). Title card: “Jet-propelled aircraft” (7:38). The first American jet-propelled plane, the P-59 Era Airacomet (7:53), made by Bell Aircraft and General Electric. Title card: “Navy Day 1945!” (8:21). President Harry Truman inspects the plaque on the USS Missouri’s deck where World War II ended (8:31). He boards the USS Renshaw, a destroyer next to the Missouri (8:41). Neighboring ships give Truman a 21-gun salute (8:50), while Navy planes fly overhead; the USS Enterprise (9:04). The film ends by mentioning the veterans of Pearl Harbor, Midway, Guadalcanal, the Coral Sea, Tarawa Sea, Saipan, the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa (9:11). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
