<description>This 1958 U.S. Navy film "Security Through Sea Power" shows the USS Saratoga (CVA-60) and an attack carrier task force armed with missiles and jet aircraft, and capable of projecting tremendous power anywhere in the world. The film also documents the 6 June 1957, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower boarded Saratoga to observe operations. For two days, Saratoga and eighteen other ships demonstrated air operations, anti-submarine warfare, guided missile operations including a launch of the Regulus missile from a submarine, a cruiser, and an aircraft carrier, and the Navy's latest bombing and strafing techniques. A nonstop flight of two F8U Crusaders spanned the nation in three hours and twenty-eight minutes, flying from USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31) on the west coast to the flight deck of the Saratoga in the Atlantic. The USS Nautilus, the world's first nuclear submarine, is also shown. The A-4 Skyhawk, A-3 Skywarrior and other aircraft are also shown operating off USS Antietam. The Terrier, Sparrow, Sidewinder and Regulus II supersonic cruise missile are also shown The USS Saratoga, a 60,000-ton aircraft carrier, is a key component of the U.S. Navy’s mobile attack force, capable of deploying high-speed jet aircraft and nuclear/conventional missiles anywhere on the high seas. Operating as part of a larger carrier task force, it enhances American military reach and diplomatic influence while serving as a deterrent against war. Advanced technologies such as angled flight decks, steam catapults, radar-guided missile systems, and nuclear-powered submarines bolster its offensive and defensive capabilities. The Navy’s global presence is demonstrated through rapid deployment, long-range surveillance, and intercontinental flight operations. This highly mobile force ensures national security by maintaining constant readiness to respond to international conflicts and potential threats. 00:00 The USS Saratoga is a formidable asset in American defense, carrying 100 high-speed jet aircraft and nuclear/conventional missiles. It can operate anywhere, moving over 600 miles per day. 0:47: As part of an attack carrier task force, the Saratoga works alongside cruisers, destroyers, and submarines, making it a mobile power center free from foreign jurisdiction.1:28:President Eisenhower, Secretary of State Dulles, and Admiral Burke witness a demonstration which serves as a deterrent to war. 1:59: The task force can launch high-speed jet bombers and nuclear-capable missiles, including the Regulus missile. Submarines are also equipped with missile-launching capabilities. The development of nuclear submarines carrying Polaris ballistic missiles allows strikes deep into enemy territory. 3:00: Aircraft such as the A3D Skywarrior and A4D Skyhawk, capable of delivering nuclear warheads, are launched. The mobility of these forces ensures that any enemy attack on the U.S. must first eliminate these widely dispersed units, minimizing the risk of a surprise attack. 4:16:Aircraft carriers have been modernized with innovations such as angled decks for simultaneous takeoff and landing, steam catapults for rapid aircraft launches, and advanced landing systems for improved safety. Supersonic jets land at high speeds and are stopped efficiently using arresting gear. 5:41: The Navy task force has a comprehensive defense system, including radar-guided Terrier missiles and fighter aircraft equipped with air-to-air missiles like the Sidewinder. These systems protect against aerial threats. 7:02: To counter enemy submarines, the task force employs advanced sonar, long-range anti-submarine aircraft, atomic depth charges, and new missile-based countermeasures. 8:46 :The Navy operates globally, utilizing multi-role aircraft such as the R3 Trade Wind for aerial refueling and surveillance missions. Aircraft can photograph vast areas in a short time. 9:42: A demonstration highlights the Navy's reach, as two F8U Crusaders launch from a Pacific carrier, fly across the U.S., and land on an Atlantic carrier in under four hours, showcasing ocean-to-ocean capabilities. 10:04:The film concludes by emphasizing the Navy’s role as a mobile, elusive force capable of operating under any conditions worldwide. It serves as both a deterrent and an active combat force, ensuring national and allied security in an era of nuclear threats.
