<description>This 1960 color film on Japan is one of a series of Pan Am New Horizons travelogues. It is narrated by Ed Stokes and produced by Movietonews, Inc. It begins with a colorful ‘focus leader’ for the film operator (:06-:21). It opens with shots of the head of the Great Buddha statue in Kamakura (:22), Mount Fuji (:29), Himeji Castle (:34), and cherry trees in blossom (:38). A bird’s eye view of Tokyo is shown and the Pan American Jet Clipper taxis in (1:15-1:40). Western wear is the norm for the people on the crowded streets (1:43-2:35). Travelers anoint themselves with incense at a street vendor (2:45-2:55). Young men perform a snake dance in the street (2:56-3:08). Shichi-Go-San (753) is a festival day celebrating young children in kimonos (3:10-4:07). A travelling storyteller uses a paper theatre to teach children (4:09-4:45). The shopping district is crowded with stores (4:46). Movie posters in English and Japanese include the 1952 Apache War Smoke and 1958 Home Before Dark (4:58). Flashing neon lights the night, including one for Toshiba (5:05-5:34). There are many Buddhist and Shinto temples and shrines (5:41-6:05). A colorfully-dressed Shinto priest enacts out a dance while the musicians play strange instruments (6:06-6:36). Kendo, a Japanese martial art, is shown (6:37-7:10). Inside a home, a Japanese family eats dinner that includes rice (7:11-7:48). A tea ceremony can be up to three hours, as shown by women in traditional kimonos (7:49-8:48). A man hand paints an item (8:49-9:04), another weaves silk on a loom (9:05-9:24). Silk fabric is imprinted with dye and rinsed in a river (9:25-10:05). Women examine cloth (10:06). A woman tries on cultured pearl jewelry; shown are necklaces, rings, earrings, and broaches (10:18-10:50). Pearl farming involves female divers bringing up oysters that are then implanted to grow a pearl within five years (10:51-11:14). A line of women chop open the grown oysters and extract the pearls (11:15-11:55). Cherry blossoms frame the different scenery (11:56-12:25). Kegon Falls creates a mist at its base (12:26-12:37). Mount Fiji rises up, its snow-covered top shown (12:38-13:05). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
