James notes that he was arrested twice for car theft. 01:46 Dissolve to flash back. James and friends play a pickup basketball game in a public park. They spot a 1967 Pontiac Bonneville convertible parked nearby. The keys are in the ignition, so they decide to take it for joy ride. 03:45 The three boys ride though the Southeast neighborhood of Washington, DC. One discovers in the glove box a transistor radio and pockets it. 04;15 The owner of the Pontiac emerges from his home and discovers his car is stolen. He calls the police and reports the theft to an officer in the communications center. 05:30 A patrolman arrives at the man’s house and makes a report. The officer radios the communications officer and delivers a general broadcast with details about the ’67 Pontiac while the kids continue joyriding. 06:50 The communications officer confirms the report and releases an “attention all cars.” Various officers in patrol cars and on foot note the car’s description. A dispatcher enters the information into a Teletype machine. 07:43 The kids continue joyriding. They spot their friend Beverly who admires the car. She suspects its stolen and refuses to join the ride. The boys continue their joy ride. An officer on foot spots the car and radios his observation of the car going west on Alabama Avenue. The call center officer relays the news to units number 11 and number 14 precincts. 09:25 Scout 114, a 1967 Ford Custom patrol unit, spots the car and radios the discovery to the call center. The call center maintains communication regarding location and direction of travel as the patrol unit pursues. 10:30 James spots the patrol car and attempts to outrace the police. The Pontiac crashes into a parked car at 36th Place and U Street. One of the kids bangs his head and is bleeding. The patrol car quickly arrives at the scene, calls in an update on the pursuit and requests an ambulance. 11:17 The call center officer confirms the transmission, relays the news to all units, and calls for the ambulance. 11:35 The police read the youths their rights and handcuff them. The ambulance, a 1967 International Travelall, arrives and paramedics tend to the injured youth. 12:37 In the booking center, the youths give their names, Wayne Caldwell and James Robert Wilson, addresses and birthdates. The arresting officers identify themselves and book the theft as “Unauthorized Use.” 13:32 In the Auto Squad room, plain clothes officers question James and Wayne about the incident. The boys are fingerprinted and photographed. The date is May 20, 1967. 14:36 Match dissolve on James, back in the job interview wrapping up the story of his two arrests. James laments, but the interviewer says he cannot hire someone with that kind of record. 15:15 END Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
