This novelty movie "A Dog Gone Story" is a 1955 film from the "Movie-Pak" series, starring Otto the wandering Dachshund who does not want a bath. This farm dog runs away from home and has an adventure in the city. The film opens on a farm in Germany where a Dachshund dog called Otto is laying in hay. The boss and his wife go about their chores pitching hay and tending to the apiary, ignoring the dog. 01:02 The boss’s daughter feeds Otto. Otto runs to the food dish, sniffs and rejects. He returns to his resting spot. 01:36 The daughter re-emerges carrying a metal wash tub, grabs Otto, places him into the tub and roughly washes him. 02:08 Otto leaps out of the tub and races off the property, past children playing in the street. He races up steps, upsets a flock of chickens, licks the cat goodbye, and runs past the handyman. He races down a road, past children who unsuccessfully try to grab him. 02:43 Otto leaps a creek and runs through a pasture into a flock of geese. He chases sheep. Horses and cows look up towards the commotion. 03:01 Otto races along a dirt road. Plays with a frog, jumps into a creek and chases after the amphibian. 03:39 From atop a hill, Otto looks across fields, hills, and a tree-lined valley. He trots along a country road, past mile markers and telephone poles. 04:06 A streetcar and automobiles barrel along a city street. Trucks, cars, and trams crisscross every which way. Otto is stopped on the sidewalk, surrounded by people waiting to cross the street. 04:33 Otto bolts out into traffic. Horns blare. A woman gasps. Passersby sigh relief as Otto makes it unscathed and continues trotting along the sidewalk. 04:44 A strangers tries to nab Otto, but the dog races away cutting in and out of city streets. 04:54 A dog catcher stands by on lookout for strays. Otto inadvertently trots straight to the dog catcher who reaches out to snatch him. Otto races away. 05:27 Otto relaxes against the side of a building. He spies a woman emerging from a butcher shop carrying packages of meat. Otto races over, grabs a sausage link, and runs off. 05:59 Neighborhood dogs, including a Boxer, a Poodle, a German Shepard, and a Terrier chase after Otto to steal his food. Otto darts into an open doorway, evading the pack. 06:22 The dog catcher is on the prowl for strays. Otto and the dog catcher make eye contact, but Otto steals away. He hides under a floor length fur coat worn by a woman who just emerged from a German DKW F7 taxi cab. The dog catcher searches high and low, but can’t find the dog. As the taxi pulls away, the dog catcher spots Otto in the back seat. 07:02 Otto enjoys the cab ride. He bolts away when the cab stops and a male passenger opens the door. Otto runs along the city streets. 07:21 He continues running along an unpaved country road, past mile markers, re-tracing his steps back to the farm. 07:47 He passes grazing horses and cows, a man on a bicycle. 07:57 He mounts stone steps onto the property where children race to greet him. The handyman smiles when he sees Otto. The boss smiles and calls to Otto. The boss’s daughter hanging wash on the clothesline smiles and calls to Otto. 08:31 Otto voluntarily enters the metal wash tub. 08:52 END Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
