They are wealthy, concerned with business, their social standing, and other material concerns. Although their devoutly Christian, African American maid Mattie prays for them, and tries to speak to the son, Ron, about Jesus, the family remains disinterested. Ron’s mother, Kate, only realizes their need for prayer after Ron is put in jail for crime. The film prolog states "Betrayed" is “the tragic story of a boy whose parents gave him everything, except the one thing he needed most " -- accepting Jesus Christ as his savior (0:29). The film was written and directed by Ken Anderson, former editor of the magazine "Mocidade para Christo". Anderson's company eventually grew to be one of the largest Christian film distributors in the world. The film stars Joyce Blackburn and Harry Zavos. The movie opens on the mother Kate's remorseful monologue (1:40). Kate and husband, Tom, quarrel over superficial affairs (2:10); Mattie retorts to herself, “that's the unfamiliest family I ever did see” (2:36). Then Ron sneaks off (2:57), and Mattie merely sighs (3:36). Adolescent boys, Sneed, Loopey, and Shorty work at a garage (3:56). Ron bullies them to join him in theft (36:13). Though Sneed and Shorty are nervous (6:11), they are pressured by “Ronnie” to come to rob “an old bachelor, lousy with dough” (6:27). All four are at the old man’s home (6:38). Shorty climbs through a window, noisily, waking the homeowner (7:37). The man dials the police (8:05). Ron’s father, Tom, uses his influence to cover up the crime so that family friends would not find out (9:05). Kate confesses that she was so humiliated that she might have disowned Ron otherwise. The family goes to church (9:14). Mattie is “in another church, far less pretentious” (9:32). The next day, Mattie begins speaking to Ronnie about Jesus (9:41), but Kate interrupts the “unintelligent nonsense.” Sneed pumps a tire (10:14). Ronnie enters (10:32) and slaps Shorty (10:42). The boys are unwilling to continue crime, but are threatened by Ron into keeping silent (11:12). The Aberdeens entertain at home (13:28). Loopey and Ronnie pick open another door (14:02); Mattie sings “Amazing Grace” (14:12) at church. She requests prayer for the Aberdeens (15:13). On another night, Ron is about to leave again (15:27), but Mattie persuades him to bring Loopey home instead (15:54). Ron worries, “What if Ma comes? This kid isn’t very fancy” (16:31). Mattie reassures him (16:37), and pops popcorn for them (16:49). Loopey enters (17:11), seemingly bewildered by the wealth, grateful for the refreshments (17:59). The snacks quickly disappear (18:14), and the three play games by the fireplace. The boys are not bad boys. However, Kate and Tom arrive with such disapproving faces (18:40), Loopey leaves immediately (18:47). Later, Ronnie and Loopey break into a warehouse (18:52). The guard unwittingly heads towards the boys (20:21). The kids ambush him, toppling a stack of boxes upon him (21:14). Ronnie attempts to steal his revolver (21:20). Loopey is knocked out (21:29), Ronnie, seized (21:35). The probation officer warns the Aberdeens that many juvenile cases stem from “a home problem” (21:49). Kate blames her son’s misbehavior on Loopey, and they plan to separate the boys (22:30). A moving truck drives off (23:29); Loopey and his family leave town. Ron and Mattie decorate a Christmas tree (23:59). Mattie tops it with a Christian ornament (24:46). A displeasured Kate (25:20) removes it (25:53). Mattie shakes her head (26:04). Ron writes to Loopey, revealing he has a gun, and they’ll do “a big job” soon (26:24). Tom and Kate are at a New Year’s Eve party (27:47); Ronnie parts, gun in pocket (28:17). Mattie returns from church (29:00) to find his empty room (29:31). Across town, (30:21) Ron is attempting armed robbery at a pub (30:40), demanding cash (31:18). The bartender tells him to go home (31:32), calling the police when he doesn’t (31:40). Lost in her thoughts in Ron’s room, Kate still blames Loopey (31:55). But she finds a letter by Loopey (32:44), asking Ron to “go straight” and not to go to pull the stickup. She finally understands the bad influence on Ron was from their own home. Kate tells Tom that they must “find God” (33:46), and asks Mattie how. Mattie says they must “call on the Lord Jesus” (34:51). It is revealed that Kate is on a visit to Ronnie in prison (35:24), asking for forgiveness. As Kate reassures Ron that they will find their way back, the screen fades to black.
