Schley produced a series of films titled “Picturelogues", and these sequences, which were shot with an Auricon sound newsreel camera, were intended to be inserted into longer films. Norman E. Schley produced these segments between 1951-1953 during Hawaiian governor Oren E. Long’s term. The film portrays Hawaii, mainly through its deep-rooted traditional hula dances and Auana musical performances, using traditional instruments such as the ukulele and feathered gourd rattles, ʻUlīʻulī. In a hotel, a Hawaiian band performs a traditional song alongside hula dancers, portraying the two main positions of hula; noho dance, which is seated, and luna dance, which is standing (04:15). They continue their performance with more songs and hula dances (06:26). A herd of cows (13:05). Two women arrange a bouquet of orchids and explain how to grow orchids from its seeds (13:27). Two hula dancers wearing leis and holding traditional Hawaiian feathered gourd rattles, named ʻUlīʻulī, perform a dance (15:00). A male performer presents a fast-paced dance with a Nifo Oti, also known as war knife (15:48). Two hula dancers wearing long red and white dresses and leis perform a slower paced dance (16:18), followed by a different set of dancers (16:40). Four women perform a musical piece alongside a hula dancer (17:31), followed by a hula dancer performing with two pu’ili sticks (18:07). A male and female dancer perform together (18:37). Another traditional band performs a song playing cello, guitar, and ukulele (19:48) Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
