The film is a bluesy dream for music fans and history buffs, and includes interviews with Belafonte and Dizzy Gillespie. Paul Robeson was a prominent cultural figure during the height of Harlem Renaissance Era. He was also an athlete, entering Rutgers on scholarship as the first black student. Paul stared in various theater performances including “Voodoo” in 1922 and later films. This reel opens as WW2 concludes (:09). French wander near the Arc de Triomphe (:09).  Roosevelt's casket appears on April 12th, 1945 (:35). Robeson read Carl Sandburg eulogy for the late president (:41). Robeson continued to study world language (:58). Paul stands under a union rights banner (1:11). Truman makes an address as new president (1:18). Paper headlines relay racial violence (1:21). Harry Belafonte (1:29) discusses returning to a victorious and still racist home front (1:26). He tells the horrific tale of army veteran Isaac Woodard; brutally attacked and blinded by police upon return to the home front (2:44). The KKK marches (3:15). Civil rights marches met at the steps of Washington (3:23). Clippings relay an attempt at ending lynching’s (3:28). Truman receives delegation over the crusade (3:36). He refused to push for anti-lynching legislation (3:51). Robeson butts up against Truman (3:59) and speaks out against US involvement in Africa as chairmen of the Council on African Affairs founded in 1937 (4:00). Campaign signs encourage votes for Wallace Taylor (4:35), in 1948. Robeson pledged support (4:49). The Chicago Daily Tribune blasts Truman's defeat by Dewey (5:25). Robeson received unfavorable press due to his connection with Wallace (5:32). Ties with communist parties further vilified him (6:01). William Drew Robeson (6:10) is pictured. A Botswana airliner; which might be a DC-3, loads passengers in Africa (6:30). Robeson was questioned over his involvement with the communist party (8:28). The editor of Harlem’s Amsterdam news; Jimmy Hicks (8:38) and the home base of the paper in New York appear (8:41). Pitcher Don Newcombe (8:45) and Robeson clash at Red Rooster. Robeson would be barred from broadcast appearances (10:20). He (10:32) attends the world peace conference in Paris (10:41). Pablo Picasso also attended (10:48). W.B. Dubious recalls an explosive portion of Robeson’s unplanned speech (11:00). Jackie Robinson (11:47) makes a statement to Washington (12:00) against Robeson. Lloyd brown (12:31) speaks on Robeson’s response. A scheduled concert for the Harlem Chapter in New York in 1949 is bombarded with anti-communist protestors (13:03). Police detour traffic (13:32). A brawl erupts (14:50). Douglas Turner Ward (14:56) explains the publics rejection of Robeson’s activism. The State Department revoked his passport (16:29) and he was considered “blacklisted”. His son stands over photographs (17:34). The black community re-embraced Paul (18:28). He began to sing in Negro churches again (18:48). Dizzy Gillespie (20:07) speaks on Paul's troubles with the government. Members of parliament (21:25) pledged support for Robeson. Robeson sings at the Canadian border (21:39) and plays a trans-Atlantic concert by telephone (23:23) for the South Whales miners. He greets whales (24:02) and receives the Russian Peace award in New York (24:49). Jimmy Hicks explains being tailed by the FBI after interviewing Paul. He addressed the 1957 World Youth Festival in Moscow from his Manhattan apartment near 160th street (26:15). Footage follows of the address (26:21). The State Department yields to pressure (28:06) and his passport was returned. Paul heads on a world tour (29:56) with Essie. He speaks in a 1958 interview (31:27). Scenes of the Civil Rights movement unfold in the US (32:00). He plays a final interpretation of Othello in London (32:18). In 1965, Essie perished (32:25). Paul falls ill in Philadelphia (33:08). He watched as US presidents visited Russia and China on the television (33:41).Nixon appears (33:46).  Carnegie Hall tribute  (34:04). Proceeds established the Paul Robeson’s' archives (34:17). Bentas Funeral Home (34:31). Buried at Ferncliff Cemetery (36:10). A final comment mentions mass media has suppressed chunks of information on Robeson (36:20).
