<description>This film, a silent home movie from Canada (we don't know who shot it), shows aftermaths of a couple of small plane crashes in the frozen tundra of the North. The wrecked airplane shown at 4:20 is Super Cub CF-LKO. This incident killed pilot Harcourt Papps and passenger Dr. A. W. Reece. The crash occurred on May 28, 1960. The plane was from Bradley Air Services Limited, also operating as First Air. Bradley was an airline headquartered in Kanata, a suburb of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It operated services to 34 communities in Nunavut, Nunavik, and the Northwest Territories. (Note: the Super Cub was equipped with tundra tires -- large low-pressure tires commonly used on light aircraft to allow operations on rough terrain.) The second aircraft shown at 12:45 is a Piper Super Cub CF-LXH. This aircraft was flown by noted bush pilot Weldy Phipps. On 28 July 1960, Phipps was flying when the aircraft suddenly went into a stall. Phipps was able to level the aircraft just above the ground. However, a hard landing was made with the wings shearing off and the undercarriage collapsing. Phipps received a bad cut above the eye, while his passenger, Steve Stanish, received a broken leg and was in extreme pain. They were rescued by the RCAF thanks to the efforts of fellow pilot Dick deBlicquy, who heard and relayed the mayday and made his way to the crash site. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Contact us via the weblink below. This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
