It features the sinking of the Flying Enterprise, the Geoje Island Incident in Korea and the Presidential election between Dwight Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson among other events. It opens with the Flying Enterprise trapped at sea after record storms hit the English coast (:28). The hull of the ship had been cracked and all passenger and crew had fled save for the Captain Henrik Kurt Carlsen (:37). A rescue tug boat attempts to shoot a line to help the Captain save the ship, however it snaps (:52) and another storm sinks the ship but not before the captain and his companion jump to safety (1:05). Though he was unable to save the ship, New York erupts in celebration hosting a ticker-tape parade in the streets to greet Captain Carlsen, safe return home (1:38). The Geoje Island Incident follows -- a prison riot in South Korea (1:55). It consisted of Chinese and Korean communist affiliated prisoners. During the riots General Dodd (2:23) was captured by inmates and was only released after bowing to prisoners demands. Due to this incident, he suffered career ending damage to his reputation and a replacement was brought in (2:31). He invoked a get-tough policy which included bringing in more troops, isolating the leaders of the riot and imprisoning the rest into smaller compounds (3:05). A bird’s eye view of the prison ground show plumes of smoke going up after the riots ended (3:13). In Tokyo on May 1st, 1952, communist partisans broke into riot only three days after Japan had won back its independence (3:51). King George VI passed in 1952 (3:57) and his daughter Elizabeth quickly returned from her vacation in Africa (4:08). As she was now to take the role of Queen, her first duty to be conducted was the burial of her father (4:08). He was buried in Windsor and the large funeral procession with the four mourning women of the royal family are shown (4:44) as they head into St. Georges Chapel at Windsor Castle. In Loch Ness, Scotland, John Cobb sought to break the world's speedboat record (5:17). He had already held the world’s auto speed mark and here he is filmed in a jet-propelled crusader (5:25). The attempt ends in tragedy as the crusader hits a wave and disintegrates (5:38). For aviation, the first craft looked at is the giant Boeing B-52 Stratofortress which is equipped with 8 engines (5:56) and this was its first year in creation. The next is the Lockheed F-94 Starfire (6:15) which is an interceptor aircraft and could hold 12 rockets in its nose (6:19). The British constructed and world’s first delta wing bomber plane the Avro Vulcan (6:32). Also in the year, the U.S. sent a monkey and two white mice into space (6:52) and footage is provided of the mice suspended in air as they experienced weightlessness (7:20). The presidential election of the year saw Adlai Stevenson (7:45) as the Democratic candidate and Dwight Eisenhower as the GOP candidate (7:49). Stevenson is seen in Chicago at the polls during election day (7:57) and Eisenhower in New York registering to cast his vote (8:04). The film concludes just after announcing Eisenhower had won with one of the largest popular votes attributed to a candidate yet (8:12).
