Merker and dedicated to the Graham Foundation. It is a unique, impressionistic homage to the splendor, motion, color, bustle and activity of Chicago, Illinois. As stated in the foreword, “the film is a series of personal, subjective impressions of certain aspects of Chicago, especially masterpieces of Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright from the late 1800s to the early 1900s and the works of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and others who influenced the Chicago of today.” The directors of the film take a particular interest in trying to convey the “American obsession with motion” by highlighting the Chicago L, the Chicago Loop and its electric signs. Opening credits (0:07). Foreword (0:36). Director Jim Davis (aka James E Davis) began his career as a painter and later began making small mobiles using plastic elements that interacted with light. Although his career was apparently somewhat stunted by lack of commercial success, he did have a number of patrons included Peggy Guggenheim. Davis began filming the shadows cast by his mobiles, and the mobiles themselves, to create a series of abstract motion pictures. In addition to "Pertaining", he also made a series of nature films that distorted reality and delved into abstraction.
