<description>This color educational film was produced for the New York Stock Exchange in the late 1950s or early 1960s, based on the female character’s clothing. It features well-known actors Janet Blair as Marge (:14), Eddie Bracken as Bertram (:20), Jim Backus as Jess (:46), and Everett Sloane as Mr. Huntley (3:13). The premise is Marge and Bertram have inherited $4,500 (half of Bert’s annual salary), which they separately seek to invest. This allows the principles of investing to be discussed in conversations. Marge secretly visits Mr. Huntley, a broker. He explains that wise investing involves only using extra money, having a savings account, and taking your time to plan a sound investment strategy (4:00-5:36). Behind Marge’s back, Uncle Jess has convinced Bert to invest the money with a promised big profit, based on ‘reliable’ insider information (5:37-6:17). Back at the brokerage, Mr. Huntley explains that the money shouldn’t be placed in a single investment so he asks the company’s research department to provide her multiple reports to study before making a decision (6:17-7:15). His conversation on the phone indicates that some stocks sold outside of a broker are done so illegally and should be reported to the Security and Exchange Commission (7:32-7:59). He explains to Marge the wisdom of using a monthly investment plan to make an initial investment and keep buying stock on a regular basis; as little as $3 a week (8:18-8:48). An institutional order valued at $200,000 is placed as Marge stands there (9:38). Marge researches the information and places her order for stock in two companies with Mr. Huntley. She has four business days to provide the money (15:23-15:47). Mr. Huntley takes her with him to the New York Stock Exchange, where real footage of traders on the floor are shown buying and selling securities. The entire process is explained, emphasizing the rules, such as no handshakes (15:59-19:20), and a tour guide reaffirms that even international stocks are included. Out to dinner, Marge tells Bertram she’s bought stock and he admits he’s already invested it in a sure thing. She is furious. He gets his money back before Jess invests it (23:50-25:49). They go together and meet with Mr. Huntley to make the payment for the stocks (26:00).
