Thirty-eight episodes of Flight were produced and aired in 1958-59; all were hosted by George C. Kenney. This episode is number twelve in the series, entitled "The Derelict". It was directed by Jean Yarbrough, written by Arthur Brown, Jr. and features a cast that includes Robert Christopher, Patrick Waltz, Christopher Dark, Ray Montgomery, Ed Perry, William Cassidy, Steve Ihnat. In this particular episode a B-47 bomber catches fire in mid-air over Alaska. Its crew must make a desperate decision about whether to bail out of the stricken aircraft; one crewman is left behind. Can he regain consciousness and control over the stricken aircraft? The episode is notable for a few reasons, one being that it shows a rare look into the interior of a B-47, for another because the situation shown in the episode is somewhat similar to the famous 1950 British Columbia B-36 crash. It seems likely that the B-36 incident inspired this show. The Boeing B-47 Stratojet (Boeing company designation Model 450) is a retired American long-range, six-engined, turbojet-powered strategic bomber designed to fly at high subsonic speed and at high altitude to avoid enemy interceptor aircraft. The primary mission of the B-47 was as a nuclear bomber capable of striking targets within the Soviet Union. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
